I've decided to start an occasional thread on Italian footballing terms, to be added to as & when I remember or come across something new. Some will be fairly niche terms, some will be much more commonplace...

Calcio Saponato I have stumbled across a bizarre form of football in Italy literally called "soapy football", where 5-a-side teams play on a greased-up inflatable pitch, which looks a lot of fun. There are specific rules and tournaments can attract sizeable crowds.

Sounded like Morecambe could have had 4 or 5 but we have some serious firepower this season and that got us out of trouble. Not a great performance but wins like this can make the difference in May.

This version of the game is said to have originated in Spilamberto, near Modena, on a greased tarpaulin pitch surrounded by straw bales. It was known as Blisghetto, using the local dialect word for sliding. These days, you can hire inflatable pitches for parties & events. Fun.

The pitch is covered in some sort of lubricant, like washing-up liquid, as well as water. Players have to play barefoot, and will usually wear some form of protective headgear. Each side has to have a designated keeper (no rush goalies here), and halves last 8 minutes.

Glenrothes Strollers Ladies 2 Dunfermline Women 3 My first visit to Over Stenton Park, a very tidy facility it is too. Absolute stinker of a 1st half with barely any football played. It improved after the break as Pars twice came from behind to seal the win deep into added time

Larkhall Thistle 1 v. Bellshill Athletic 3 A big roof and a playable pitch were the key things to find today and we found them at Larkhall. Lovely big barn of a main stand, filled with a large crowd. Bellshill much the better side but only sealed the win in stoppage time.

This is a great offer for train travel in Scotland if you have children. And frustrating if you don't!
Family ticket for unlimited travel by ScotRail during a period of seven days in October, for just Β£50. https://t.co/Ci0bxEKc5e

This is actually a really good comparison: not the most athletic of midfielders, can drift through games at times, but will leave you with memories of stunning goals and superb moments. Alfie doesn't have quite the temper of Zizou though.

Games like that really make me miss going week in, week out. They make wading through all the manure worth it.

It has been a long time since we had a night like that, with a big following, away to a promotion rivalwhere we won and won well. This is shaping up to be quite the team, giving us special nights like this. We've come a long way in the last 2 years; how much further can we go?

Italian phrase of the day: come ti permetti? How dare you? For example, "Ma come ti permetti di abbattere uno monumento storico che rappresenta uno pezzo importantissimo del patrimonio calcistico a livello mondiale?"
Milan's city council approved the sale of the San Siro stadium and surrounding land to local soccer clubs Inter and AC Milan for 197 million euros ($230 million), paving the way for its demolition and the construction of a new venue https://t.co/fVxSZwFoag

Albion Rovers 2 Linlithgow Rose 6 A trip to the always magnificent Cliftonhill where the less-than-magnificent Albion fell behind early on and only rallied after going 3 down. A second half announcement of βfree piesβ nearly caused a stampede in the direction of the pie hut.

Just wonderful, as always. In many ways, we should be grateful that Mourinho chose sport rather than politics.
