Fentanyl mixed with xylazine, an animal sedative, is an emerging threat to the U.S. due to its increasing presence in the illicit drug supply. #Xylazine can be life-threatening, especially when combined with #fentanyl. Learn more about this issue:

We are emergency physicians are we are inpatient by nature so we all want results now. I get it. This is going to take some time, but this will be ok and we're going to come out of this better and stronger. @ACEPNow /9.

We are not the first specialty to go through this. Anesthesia went through something similar and saw a huge drop-off in the number of US applicants and they recovered after a market correction. They are now one of the most competitive specialties. @ACEPNow /8.

ACEP is looking at ED accreditation (much like surgery does Level 1 trauma centers). Maybe it is about time we define for ourselves the standards, staffing, and resources needed in all EDs. @ACEPNow / 7.

The ACGME is doing a deep dive currently on the standards needed to accredit an EM residency. All of our national groups came together to work on recommendations to "raise the bar" and ensure high standards for residency training. @ACEPNow /6.

The good news is that this week, there are over 2400 medical students who want to be emergency physicians and we should be celebrating them. @ACEPNow /5.

The overall number of applicants in 2023 is roughly the same as 2019. The reason the unfilled rates look so bad is that we continue to add new residency programs and new residency spots so the denominator is a lot bigger, which make unfilled rates look low overall. @ACEPNow 4/.

Thankfully, the workforce report that was a product of ALL EM organizations gave us a heads up that something would need to change. and it has. both on the supply and demand side. That in itself is a not a bad thing for long term stability of the specialty. @ACEPNow 3/.

The number of residency programs increased 16% between 2019 and 2023 and the # of spots increased by 17% in that time frame. That was never going to be sustainable. We needed to hit the reset button. 2/.

Here's some good news this week. 1. Ted Lasso returns on 3/15 and we could all use a good laugh. Football is life. 2. The results of the match are not that "the sky is falling". We were growing too fast as a specialty and this can be viewed as a market correction. @ACEPNow 1/
