The largest wildfires on Earth are burning again in South East Asia. Smouldering peatlands. Peat is ancient organic matter and when it burns it instantaneously becomes net carbon emissions. It is like burning fossil fuels but without any of the benefits. Total destruction.
I wonder what it will take for these Indonesian fires to get mass media attention? Thousands of fires, smoke plumes the size of France, tens of millions exposed to hazardous smoke, & the loss of crucial carbon stores. The Tenerife fires have had more coverage! Today's image:

Biggest Ginkgo leaves I have ever seen! Nine-inch-wide (22.9 cm) lamina. These long shoot leaves were produced along a beefy sucker off a street tree in Ghent, Belgium. #mesozoic #fossil #paleobotany #ginkgo

Multiple active #wildfires have been detected in #Chile since Feb 2. The total area affected so far is 270,000 ha. The smoke from the #fires is also visible via Sentinel-3A. Over 3000 firefighters and 60 aircraft are battling the flame nonstop for the last 4 days. #PrayForChileπ

While we were busy thinking about rain, this beautiful winter weather sneaked up on us and took us completely by surprise! It's been so fun to see Uist blanketed in a layer of white fluffy snow and a community of snowmen (women, cats, and even a sheep) pop up along the roadsides!

Fantastic paper yielding some really important insights into charcoal dispersal!
New paper for #CharcoalTuesday! π₯ @richardsvachula and I modelled how blocky and elongated charcoal disperse Elongated particles appear to travel much further - this makes things tricky for #palaeofire reconstruction Online now in @HoloceneJ - https://t.co/g55Y1sjZQG
