Some great questions on back-channel negotiation from this very engaged audience. The image is from intermediary Brendan Duddy's extraordinary diary of the 1975 IRA ceasefire. Thanks to Kevin Kenny & all at @GIHNYU for making me so welcome here as a @Fulbright_Eire fellow.

It was a pleasure to host @niallodoc for a lecture on his research on back-channel negotiations in Northern Ireland. Many thanks to Dr. Ó Dochartaigh for his engaging analysis of archival sources, which broadens our understanding of the conflict & peace process.

Incredible that the release of 188 boxes is only 30% of the entire Mary Robinson archive. This archive will benefit many disciplines across @uniofgalway including @UniofGalwayLaw @GalwaySocAndPol @IrishCentreHR @Galway_Research & many more.

2/5 At 188 boxes, this tranche = 30% of overall collection, the biggest archive at @uniofgalway. The release covers material relating to her Legal work as barrister, senior counsel, advisor & campaigner from 1960s onwards, alongside her term as President of Ireland, 1990-1997.

As early as 1979 US officials floated the idea of "projects [in N. Ireland] financed by...US, UK & EEC sources" with British officials, in return for pol progress. A British official thought it 'a rather odd conversation' I'll talk about this & more on Fri https://t.co/AzI80MHvOW
