I’m so pleased to be going back to the #Dickens on the Strand #festival in #Galveston, Texas this December - my first time back in the US since 2019. I don’t yet know my #Dickensian schedule, but it will all be up on the @GalvHistory website soon.

After the 1900 hurricane, a board of engineers developed a plan to fortify Galveston against future disasters. The board recommended a 17-foot high, three-mile-long seawall and raising the entire city’s grade, or elevation. Here, the houses on the right have already been raised.

When the hurricane of 1900 struck Galveston, islanders took refuge wherever they could. Reportedly, 200 people sheltered in the Landes-McDonough House. The eclectic Victorian structure with exuberant Romanesque accents is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. 📷: 1911
