This year, nearly 14,000 New Yorkers saved millions of dollars in fees by filing their taxes for free with Direct File. New York is proud to be one of the first states to offer this tool, and we’re working to expand the program so we can save even more taxpayers money next year!

It’s important to not lose sight of how we got to today’s big announcement on Direct File. The IRS and U.S. Digital Service built a first-class technology product following extensive testing and feedback from taxpayers. It was a master class in how to build government technology.

The Direct File pilot year has come to a wrap and over the past weeks we have taken a step back to evaluate how the pilot went; took some time to come together as a team to share our stories and lessons learned; and we continue to talk to stakeholders, partners, and our users 🧵

The IRS Direct File pilot was nothing short of a watershed moment for government service delivery in the United States. The feedback from New Yorkers in this report is extraordinary: "I never have said this in a survey, but there is no way to my mind you need to improve this."

WHOA! NYC reports it has almost completely eliminated its (VERY LARGE) backlog for SNAP (food stamps) and cash aid! And they did it by... reducing administrative burden! Namely, they are waiving the 6-month report!!
