As I sat waiting for information about
@SenMarkKelly
’s safety today, I couldn’t stop thinking about what you must have gone through 10 years ago this week. I’m so glad you and your staff are safe. I love you, sweetie.

#DemConvention
You were by my side when I took my oath of office nearly 14 years ago. I’m so excited to be by yours today as you’re sworn in as our next Arizona Senator.
.
@JoeBiden
and I agree that pain is best overcome by purpose.
I still struggle to speak, but at tonight’s
#DemConvention
, I made my voice heard.
For the safety and future of our country, we must elect
@JoeBiden
and
@KamalaHarris
.
To the world, you’re a former astronaut, Navy veteran, and now, US Senator from Arizona. To me, you’re the smart, service-driven man I fell in love with all those years ago. I was so proud to be by your side for your swearing-in,
@SenMarkKelly
.
Today it's a tragedy in Boulder, Colorado. This past weekend it was a house party in Philadelphia. And last week it was an armed attack on Asian American women in the Atlanta area. It doesn't have to be this way. It’s beyond time for our leaders to take action.
Not many people know that I play the French horn. I hadn’t played since I was child. But after I was shot, I started speech therapy, physical therapy, and music therapy. Relearning an instrument has been a huge part of my recovery, and I’m getting stronger every day.
After I was shot, and before I had even opened my eyes, then-President
@BarackObama
visited me in the hospital.
He was—and still is—a true leader and a friend.
You can watch this moment and his interview in
#GabbyMovie
tonight on
@CNN
!
After I was shot,
@JoeBiden
was there for me. And I know he’s been there for countless other survivors of gun violence. Not just with words, but with policies. If you want to see what a real leader looks like—tune in to ABC tonight for Biden's town hall.
I have no more words. I only have anger. President Donald Trump and Leader Mitch McConnell must call the Senate back from August recess immediately. We cannot afford to wait another day for lawmakers to address this horrific national public safety threat.

Breaking News: At least nine people were killed and 16 others wounded in a shooting in Ohio. It was the second mass shooting in the U.S. in less than 24 hours.
Ten years ago, my life and my community changed forever. I was shot in the head, six people were killed, 12 others injured. But the attack did not break me—or the people I represented in Congress. We came together, turned pain into purpose, and found hope in each other.
11 years ago today, a normal Saturday morning in Tucson turned our lives upside down. I was shot in the head. Six of my constituents were killed and 12 more were injured. My life and my community would never be the same. We were devastated, but we were not broken.
History will remember Senator John McCain — and so many who fought before, alongside, and after him — as heroes. Let’s make sure history remembers Trump as a one-term president.
It’s the honor of a lifetime to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom today.
I’ve oriented my life around public service. I’m so grateful to be recognized today by
@POTUS
along with my friend Senator John McCain and so many other accomplished individuals.
I’m devastated and I’m furious. Ten people murdered and three others injured while going about their weekends in a grocery store. Eleven of the 13 individuals shot today were Black, in a shooting motivated by white supremacist hate.
I’m here for you,
@GovWhitmer
. I know that being a woman elected to office comes with great pride and sometimes great risk. Violence has no place in our democracy, and we all need to vote for leaders who uphold that simple truth. Words matter.
Update: Authorities in Michigan charged 13 men with a battery of terrorism and conspiracy charges, revealing what they said was a plot by an anti-government group to storm the State Capitol building, initiate a civil war and kidnap the governor.
I’ll never forget the comfort that
@JoeBiden
brought Corey after he lost his dad in the Parkland shooting. This powerful new ad from
@Your_Americans
illustrates Joe’s character. He has the compassion and leadership to bring this country together.
.
@SpeakerPelosi
, you were there for me after I was shot. You’ve been there for our country in perilous times. As a friend and as a leader, you have answered the call. Thank you for your service. Strong women get things done!
When
@CaptMarkKelly
was trained to use a camera at NASA, we never imagined those skills would be featured in a documentary. The footage he took is hard to rewatch, but it’s a reminder of how far I’ve come.
I love you, Mark.
#GabbyMovie
I’ll never forget this moment—9 years ago today—when I returned to DC to cast my first vote since being shot. It was my duty to my district and to my country. No matter how many years pass, being southern Arizona’s voice in Congress will be the greatest honor of my life.
Tonight I attended President
@JoeBiden
’s
#SOTU
speech where he confronted our country's gun violence epidemic head on.
Too many Americans are dying every day, and I know he will never stray from our mission to protect communities from gun violence.
Yesterday, my synagogue in Tucson was vandalized. It's heartbreaking to see such a disgusting act in a place where so many are meant to feel safest. Despite these actions, we will not be shaken. Hate has no place in Arizona.
Gabe Zimmerman should be turning 41 today. Gabe was my Outreach Director when he was killed by my side on January 8, 2011. But he was more than a staffer—he was a friend, advisor, and leader whose love for Arizona was infectious. Happy 41st birthday, Gabe. I think of you daily.
After I was shot, I fought to regain all that I lost—from walking to speaking to being able to serve my country.
Now, 10 years later—as we react to an attack on our democracy—I’m sharing what I’ve learned about finding the determination to move ahead.
As someone who is still recovering from a gunshot to the head, I am heartbroken and infuriated that Ralph Yarl now faces a lifetime of recovery.
At 16 years old. For simply ringing a doorbell.
We cannot continue to be a nation defined by gun violence and injustice.
Tonight, I’ll be cheering on my husband,
@CaptMarkKelly
, as he takes the debate stage. I know he’s the best choice for Arizona — tune in to see why. And text DEBATE to 98478 to get updates in real time!
#FullSpeedAhead
Today, I
#WearOrange
on Gun Violence Awareness Day in honor of Hadiya Pendleton and every victim of gun violence. This crisis has touched far too many Americans. We cannot let another year pass without action.
I will never stop fighting for a future free from gun violence.
When I met
@CaptMarkKelly
, I could tell he had the same dedication to public service. He served this country in the Navy and at NASA, and now, I know he’ll serve the people of Arizona honorably.
12 years ago today, I was meeting my constituents at a local Safeway.
Then everything changed.
Six people were shot & killed: Christina-Taylor Green, Dorothy Morris, Judge John Roll, Phyllis Schneck, Dorwan Stoddard, Gabe Zimmerman. I was shot in the head. 12 more were injured.
My dear friend Gabe Zimmerman would be 43 this weekend.
Gabe was my Outreach Director when he was killed by my side on January 8, 2011. For someone so young, he left behind an immense legacy of public service that inspires me to this day.
Happy birthday, Gabe. I miss you.
After I was shot, I was able to sing a full song before I could complete a full sentence. Not many people know just how important music has been in my recovery.
Thankful to
@JudyWoodruff
,
@AnneDavenport
&
@JeffreyBrown
for letting me share my story.
I have so much respect for
@Simone_Biles
and
@mPinoe
, who inspire us all to live with courage, speak their truth, and advocate for justice and equality.
No matter your life path, you can always find ways to serve.
Today, I’m proud to endorse
@BetoORourke
for Governor of Texas.
The lives of too many Texans have been forever changed by gun violence & they need a champion in Austin who can help heal broken communities and honor lives lost with action. Rep. O’Rourke is that leader.
We’re endorsing
@BetoORourke
for Governor of Texas!
While Greg Abbott puts NRA money above the safety of Texans over and over again, Rep. O’Rourke helped lead the charge to pass gun safety laws during his time in the House.
We’re proud to support his bid for governor.
#txgov
This weekend, we lost our furry companion Nelson. We got Nelson after I was shot to help with my recovery, and he immediately became a member of the family.
We’ll miss him trying to steal food off the table and being a constant comfort in our home.
Goodbye sweet Nelson ❤️.
I’m deeply humbled and honored that
@POTUS
will be awarding me the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Serving southern Arizona in Congress was an honor of a lifetime, but I’m also lucky to have had a second chance at service: in the fight to end gun violence.
8 years ago, 20 children and 6 educators never came home from Sandy Hook.
Families were devastated. The nation was heartbroken. And then our leaders failed to act, so we all stood up.
Today and always we remember those who should still be with us—and honor them with action.
This is the state of America's gun violence crisis:
Since President Trump took office, over 75,000 people in America have been killed with a gun. There have been nearly 700 mass shootings. At least 3,300 children shot and killed. Over 1,000 women shot by intimate partners.
#SOTU
Today would’ve been my staffer and friend Gabe Zimmerman’s 40th birthday. He was killed by my side on January 8, 2011, while serving his community. Mark and I will always strive to carry his spirit of service forward.
Last night, I tested positive for COVID. Fortunately, I only have mild symptoms, and I'm grateful to be vaccinated and boosted.
Please send any TV or audiobook recommendations for quarantine!
Stay safe, friends 💜
August 1, 2011 – 8 years ago today – I returned to the House floor to cast my vote one more time. It would be the last time. My seat never belong to me, but to the constituents of my district in southern Arizona. It was the honor of a lifetime to be their voice in Congress.
Thinking of Christina-Taylor Green on her 21st birthday. A member of her student council and the only girl on her baseball team, she was robbed of so many milestones on that January day waiting to meet me. Her memory is a reminder of all the good we can do in the world if we try.
Eleven years ago, I left the hospital facing a lifetime of recovery. Today, I’m leaving the hospital glad it’s only appendicitis, and grateful for friends, family, my incredible medical team, and of course
@CaptMarkKelly
, who gives true meaning to “in sickness and in health.”
I’m honored to be attending President Biden’s
#SOTU
tonight, where I’m wearing orange to remind everyone in the room that we must continue to work together and save lives from gun violence. 🧡
I'm thinking of Christina-Taylor Green on her 22nd birthday.
An aspiring elected official and the only girl on her baseball team, her dreams were cut short in January 2011 waiting to meet me.
She dreamed of making the world a better place, and I carry her memory with me daily.

Hi Justice Ginsburg, a bunch of news outlets once declared me dead, too. But I’m still working to make the world a better place. Just like you. Here’s to many more years of fighting for justice.
This week
@JoeBiden
and
@KamalaHarris
reminded us what compassionate, strong leadership looks like. I'm voting for Joe and Kamala because they've spent their careers fighting to stop gun violence. If you can’t already tell, I'm excited to help elect them.
#GunSafetyPresident
9 years ago, I was doing what I loved most—meeting with constituents—when six people were killed, 12 were injured, and I was shot in the head at a Safeway in Tucson. What I've learned since that day is that it's not the setback that defines us, but how we respond to it.
I’m proud to endorse
@JoeBiden
for President of the United States.
After I was shot, Joe was there for me. And he's always been there for the gun safety movement.
He’s taken on the NRA and passed gun safety bills—and he’s running to be a
#GunSafetyPresident
to do it again.
Proud to be a part of Women for Biden-Harris!
With so much at stake this year, I’m voting for
@JoeBiden
and
@KamalaHarris
because they’re the only candidates for president who have fought for and will continue to fight for the rights and safety of women.
Let’s get it done!
My friend President Biden is the strongest gun safety president in US history, and I know that we'll continue to enact policies to make our country safer with
@JoeBiden
and
@KamalaHarris
leading the fight.
That’s why today I am proud to endorse them for a second term!
What a way to kick off 2023!
It’s an honor to be the
@RoseParade
Grand Marshal. This year’s theme, “turning the corner” resonates deeply with me. I’ve tried to embody the philosophy of moving ahead in both my own recovery & in my life’s work to end gun violence.
Now that Mark has been sworn in as Arizona’s newest Senator, the work begins. Follow along to see how he’s fighting for Arizona every day in the Senate at his new official Senate account:
@SenMarkKelly
.
This time last year I was on the mound at Fenway throwing the first pitch at a Red Sox game!
Everyone has a part to play in the fight to end gun violence, and I’m grateful that the
@RedSox
have stepped up to the plate. ⚾ 💪
.
@KamalaHarris
’s powerful response on gun violence sets the bar high. I challenge every presidential candidate to make gun safety a priority in their campaign. American voters demand it.
#HarrisTownHall
At age 9, Christina-Taylor Green had just been elected to her student council and was waiting to meet me when she was fatally shot in Tucson.
She'd be turning 19 today.
I think of Christina-Taylor daily and carry her dreams of public service with me in my own life’s work.
Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office “begging” for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump. Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked-USED!
I’m devastated that this keeps happening. I'm furious that Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump are refusing to do ANYTHING to keep us safe.
Just last week, I was in El Paso meeting with survivors from the Walmart shooting. I'm heartbroken that Texas has to go through this again.
BREAKING: A mass shooting has been reported in Texas involving two suspects in separate vehicles shooting at people randomly.
At least 30 injuries have been reported.

Thank you,
@SpeakerPelosi
, from the bottom of my heart. As a friend, you came to my hospital bed in my darkest days. As an advocate for gun violence prevention, you have no equal.
Every year, I am brought back to this moment.
@GabbyGiffords
, you have been a model of strength and persistence for the last nine years. Even as our hearts ache for those impacted by gun violence, every day of your fight to end gun violence gives us hope for the future.
Words used to come so easy for me, so I know how hard
@GenMHayden
is fighting to recover from aphasia. This is a testament to his strength and patriotism. Watch his powerful endorsement of
@JoeBiden
.

Watch his moving testimonial.
307. There have been 307 mass shootings so far this year. Do we really want to raise our children in a country where mass shootings like Thousand Oaks are a weekly occurrence? A country where every single day in America, more than 90 people are killed with guns?
My dear friend Gabe Zimmerman would have turned 44 today.
Gabe was killed at my side on January 8, 2011 in the Tucson shooting. His love for Arizona and passion for serving his community inspires me every day.
I miss you, Gabe.
I’ll never forget the anger and pain I felt 8 years ago today when the Senate failed to pass background check legislation after Sandy Hook.
But the fight to end gun violence was just getting started.
It's beyond time for our leaders to work together and make our country safer.
Christina-Taylor Green should be turning 18 today.
She was only 9 when she was shot and killed in Tucson waiting to meet me.
Today, I’m remembering who Christina was—a budding politician, dancer, athlete—and who she could’ve been. My love is with her family.
In El Paso or anywhere else, our families should not be afraid to run errands. We should not be afraid to attend festivals or concerts. We should not be afraid to worship or to go to school. But that’s not the America we’re living in today.
Two weeks. Two students killed tackling shooters in their classrooms.
The families of Kendrick Castillo and Riley Howell should be planning for their futures, not funerals.
This is devastating. Our leaders owe it to them to take action.
Last weekend, I became a bat mitzvah!
It’s never too late to explore your faith or heritage. The story of the Jewish people is one of endurance, of bravery, of the will to keep going—something I connect to deeply. I was overjoyed to celebrate with my Rabbi, friends, and family.
Today marks 24 years since the shooting at Columbine High School, but no matter how many years pass, I will always remember the 13 lives lost that day.
Littleton will always be in my heart, and I will always fight for a safer, better future.
#HonorWithAction
I have a message for
@SenateMajLdr
McConnell:
Do your job. The American people demand it.
Join me in demanding a vote on
#BackgroundChecksNow
from Mitch McConnell—sign my letter:
The House passed the bipartisan background checks bill. Senator McConnell is blocking it.
Today, I’m delivering this letter to McConnell urging him to bring
#HR8
or
#S42
to a vote.
Speaking is hard for me, but I can’t be more clear: The Senate must pass
#BackgroundChecksNow
.
I'm so excited to be Grand Marshal of the 2023
@RoseParade
tomorrow!
I’ll be in the parade in the morning alongside marching bands, floats, and horses. Then there's the bowl game later that day where I'll toss the coin.
I'm already looking forward to the new year!
10 years ago today, I was sworn in for my third and last term in Congress. I had no idea my life would change forever just a few days later. But I’ve never let anything hold me back, and that’s why I’m proud to continue to serve every day by fighting for a safer, better country.
They were children. It was unspeakable. And then our leaders did nothing—so we all stood up.
Today marks 6 years since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. No matter how many years pass, my heart breaks. No matter how many years pass, my life will remain devoted to this cause.
