This is bad actually and makes it even harder for working class people to get into academia
Started reviewing PhD applications this year, and while I expected it, I am still blown away by the students' achievements before starting their PhDs. The 2015 version of me wouldn't have even made it past the first round.

Last week was my last as a member of the @FlitschSabine lab. I’ve said before but it really has been a special place to study and work, and I’m very grateful for all of the wonderful colleagues and friends I have shared a lab with @Turner_Biocat @UoMMIB ❤️

Finally, I’m proud to report I can give everyone the true value of a PhD thesis! My car was broken into yesterday, with the thieves going through my suitcase and laundry bag. They took my Switch but left my thesis, leaving me to deduce the value is <£260 😂

I’d also like to thank my examiners, Nic Harmer and David Leys, for their thoughtful discussion and suggestions regarding my work and, of course, for passing me!

I’m also very fortunate to have worked with all the members of the fantastic Flitsch and @Turner_Biocat groups, who have helped create a wonderful environment to work in, alongside the wider @UoMMIB community, in particular @GreenGroupMIB!

I’m also very grateful to the people who came to discuss both my work and theirs during the conference. I don’t always find it easy to ‘network’, but it was a pleasure to meet so many great scientists and learn about their projects!! Now to knuckle down with the thesis…

So proud of my flatmate @MJWillmott_ (and other group members!) on passing his viva. Years of writing ‘happy birthday’ on viva cards finally catching up to him 😂
Congratulations to our 2019/2020 student cohort for passing their PhD vivas in recent months! @hairofthehogg @MJWillmott_ @TillyAllen_ @rue_arnau 🎉 #ScientistsOfTheFuture

Excited to be giving an oral presentation on our work using ancestral sequence reconstruction for biocatalysis at ESBOC! Lots of great speakers lined up, and the conference centre is right on the beach, what a treat ☺️
Come and join us in beautiful Biarritz, France, for top-quality #chembio and #bioorganic, 13th-15th May 2024! The abstract deadline is fast approaching, don't wait!. ESBOC is the oldest symposium in the field!
