I have this image of the secretary standing on the border, sheaf of paper in his hand, sweeping it back and forth. Spelling is important.

Seymour Hersh's new book 'Reporter: A Memoir' is a truly inspiring chronicle of investigative reporting in this troubled time for news media. Chapt. 9 'Finding Calley' should be required reading at every J-school.

I know something like this has 0 chance of happening, and I am sure the practical details would be challenging. But something has to happen. The current situation is untenable in a democracy.

I teach my students how to use ATIP and many ask why they would bother. I don't blame them, when some requests can take years to complete (I know this from the 2017 News Media Canada FOI audit, that still had letters trickling in in 2021) and even the most basic may take months.

Departments would be relieved of the burden of running ATIP branches, though they would still have to identify the records, as they do now. Something like this might restore some faith in the system, which simply doesn't exist right now.

Requesters, and departments could appeal, with the basic details of the appeal made public in a registry. Sure, you'd have to create a new bureaucracy, but if it were truly at arms length from government, it could make independent decisions based solely on the law.

I once felt that moving the processing of requests to an arms-length body was an unworkable idea, but maybe it's worth a try. Why not turn the system on its head and have a body that is not beholden to line departments make the access decisions?

I don't think it would be overstating it to say that in practical terms, the access-to-information regime is near collapse. I am coming around to the view that a complete overhaul is the only solution.
The Office of the Information Commissioner fielded a record number of access-to-information complaints last year, despite years of promises from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reform the system. #cdnati #cdnfoi #cdnpoli

Alexa McDonough inspired many women to consider careers in politics, but more than four decades after she became Nova Scotia's NDP leader, men still outnumber women in positions of power across Canada. @JoshNeufeldt of @signalhfx gathered the data. https://t.co/Si8eaRkn5i
