That was some really impressive shit from Seth Lugo today, who just no matter how many dudes he puts on base or how not overpowering it looks just gets the job done. 13 whiffs on 9 different pitches, including at least 1 whiff on 8 of those pitches. Fun deadline target.

I'm sure the Cubs interested. Based on how previous negotiations have gone, I don't see any way a deal gets remotely close.

While I think the Cubs are definitely going to check in on Cease, the more interesting target might be Robert Suarez. Jed has repeatedly preached creativity. Suarez is a high-end RP whose cost would actually be quite low because of the player option. Was discussed in off-season.

After all the hand-wringing about him, Justin Turner is now slashing .288/.338/.424 (114 wRC+) vs LHP. Also has gone .286/.412/.500 (161 wRC+) as a pinch-hitter. That's 6th in all of baseball in the pinch, minimum 10 PAs. Pretty damn solid bench bat. .

The key here is how badly the Royals want Owen Caissie, who simply won't be available for Seth Lugo, but would be a part of the discussion for Kris Bubic.

I know Morton's name popped up more this morning, but I wonder if the Orioles aren't being talked about enough as a trade partner. Solid (Not TOR) starter in Morton. Two quality rental RPs in Domínguez and Soto. Interesting buy low RP option in Cano. Bench/utility bat in Urías.

Saying "This is the year" and then suggesting trading for the dude with the single worst ERA in baseball by nearly a half a run (minimum 50 IP) is downright hysterical.

Cubs prospects who I would be SHOCKED to see moved for a dude on an expiring contract:. Moisés Ballesteros, Jefferson Rojas, Owen Caissie, Jaxon Wiggins. Just simply can't move those dudes in a deal like that. Other guys you'd prefer not to, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Here's where I'd rank Cubs needs heading into the deadline. 1) Playoff-caliber SP.2) 3B.3) High-leverage pen depth.4) SP with playoff rotation OR pen upside.5) Backup CF. Lot of potential ways to address all, but that's the pecking order of attacking the deadline, IMO.

Pretty easily 5 or 6 for me. Clear top 4 of (no order) Ballesteros, Caissie, Rojas and Wiggins. Conrad and Alcántara duking it out for 5-6.
