4/4 Baselines often underestimate the rapid development of renewable energy but overestimate coal consumption and #CCS scaling. This is relevant, as baselines tend to be crucial reference points, influencing the scale and costs of the #coaltransition in models. #energytwitter

3/4 Scenarios post-AR5 have shifted towards the first archetype (Phase-out), partly due to cost updates for renewable technologies. However, no evidence of changes in model assumptions was found. Updates are needed to capture well changes in climate science, technology & policy.

2/4 Although variability is high, it can be condensed into three main archetypal coal consumption pathways: Phase-out (38% of the cases), Persistence (42%), and Resurgence (20%). The latter two significantly rely on the availability of affordable CCS.
