“I like to tell people that I’m trying to combat the stigma of women’s work through my pieces. Even though I do identify as a woman. Hand embroidery has been a medium that’s been so gendered throughout its entire existence,” Artist Carly Owens Weiss said. https://t.co/xZvGrLqTNL

Continuing FLONC's 100-county tour, we had the privilege of visiting the @FolkSchool! We spent the afternoon touring the campus and meeting with students and staff. We hope you can visit this NC-cultural gem and even take a class! 🎨🪴#100ctytour 📷: Robert Grand

Thanks to generous grant funding, Becky could focus on her craft while working within our Folk School community and building strong connections with neighbors through Olive's Porch, our space in downtown Murphy. Donte today and support programs like this:

"One of the beauties of this residency," she said, "is that you feel encouraged to learn, invest, and percolate." She added, " I had some ideas of what would happen when I got here, but I wasn’t fully sure. I think that’s also the power of it."

Last summer, we welcomed Becky Hill, a percussive dancer, square dance caller, choreographer, community organizer, and educator, to Brasstown. Through square dance weekends, flatfooting workshops, and volunteering, Becky connected generations of folks using music and dance.

I want to try #blacksmithing as research for #TheFireApprentice so I signed up for class at @folkschool in March. The teacher bio includes this: "When you first put hammer to hot steel, you want Caitlin there to guide, mentor, and inspire you. She's good at lighting fires."🖤😁🔥
