These microCTs are gorgeous😍 Would love to 3D print this gal in fancy iridescent PLA, I have a hunch she would look amazing! https://t.co/385wGvq164

A few weeks ago I got to play with a fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) scan. One of the longest prints I've done clocking in at 34 hrs. A bit of a process to clean up the printing supports but managed to preserve most fine structures including the stinger!

The new paper by Rebecca Spiecker et al. demonstrates dose-efficient #Xray imaging of living organisms. Using this technique, we were able to observe tiny parasitoid #wasps in vivo within their host eggs . Measurements were done at @KITKarlsruhe's new beamline at @desy.

The new X-ray imaging technique can produce detailed images of living organisms with a much lower X-ray dose than previously possible. The researchers used the new technique to image tiny parasitoid wasps emerging from their host eggs for more than 30 minutes.

Last week @pipilika_aj and I did some exciting microCT tests for a range of different specimens and mounting configurations! Here are some of the stingers I was checking out (some more successful than others). Thanks Ajay for hosting the fun lab shenanigans! #microCT #hymenoptera

About four years ago @ReneBulla and I pitched David (@EvoBiomech) the idea for this. I just wanted to scan some ants and see if that would make using machine learning tools a little more robust. I hope this will bring some enjoyment to fellow part-time ecologists❤️

1/ 🤖 New paper hot off the press 🐜 Automated behavioural analysis using machine learning is great, but still needs lots of effort to curate training data. What if a computer could generate that data for you? Say hello to replicAnt https://t.co/LtCipnE59E #OpenSource
