Entomologist focusing on functional morphology, evolutionary biology and synchrotron-based X-ray imaging methods @KITKarlsruhe.

The new paper by Rebecca Spiecker et al. demonstrates dose-efficient #Xray imaging of living organisms. Using this technique, we were able to observe tiny parasitoid #wasps in vivo within their host eggs . Measurements were done at @KITKarlsruhe's new beamline at @desy.
The new X-ray imaging technique can produce detailed images of living organisms with a much lower X-ray dose than previously possible. The researchers used the new technique to image tiny parasitoid wasps emerging from their host eggs for more than 30 minutes.

This X-ray technique enables small organisms and sensitive samples to be studied at high resolution over long periods. https://t.co/rXMrWK6zrm The technique directly magnifies the X-ray image rather than converting the X-ray image into a visible light image first. #OPG_Optica

Abstract. Traumatic insemination refers to mating in which males pierce the female’s integument with his penis for insemination. Strepsiptera are often lis

#FossilFriday A small WIP preview of one of our thalattosaurs. This strange creature swam in the warm shallow seas of Switzerland ~240ish million years ago. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess... #3DModel #PhD #scicomm #fossils #paleontology @UZH_Science @KITKarlsruhe

We have finally released a the final version of our new study on the abdominal anatomy of ants—tackling questions of skeletomusculature, homology, and terminology. We put emphasis on the whole abdomen plus some extras—especially the metapleural gland and sting! Open Access! 🧵
Following up on @PueraFormicarum: In addition to clarifying the metapleural gland structure (check out the gland duct opening at the top of the atrium, the “Sieve Plate”), we also addressed other critical structures (1/9)
