In this essay I explore a pre-Columbian object's complex mythology and how hyper-real technologies disrupt referentiality & reshape authenticity. It served as a point of departure for my dissertation, completed last year and being prepared for publication.

A lot of the branding tricks are about deflecting responsibility from the humans behind the technologies and anchoring it on the model itself - which must first appear as an "agent" in order for the trick to work.

What is a "hallucination" if not a "bug" or "spreading false information" and "operating in a way that was not intended"?

We need to make an active effort to demystify the language we use to talk about these models and attend to the additional layers of fetish AI companies are enveloping their branding discourse with.

It's not a matter of policing speech, but of translating scientific research to forms and concepts that won't reproduce misunderstandings about technologies that the majority of people are witnessing for the first time.

As transformer models continue to grow in popularity beyond expert enclaves it becomes even more important to peel off the layers of anthropomorphism that are pervasive in the terminology. 🧵

A really refreshing take. The task at hand should be more focused on getting students to understand the importance of developing critical thinking rather than producing more effective surveillance over the form of their writing.

@SparkedByAI Yes, it's what I tell, too. AdobeFire is commercially safe, just waiting until it's released for commercial use. Most want to see how they can add AI to their workflow (not just image generation).

Dear reporters, If someone says AI is going to kill us all… don’t ask what we are going to do about it… ask why they think that, what is their evidence or reasoning

People are worried about runaway AIs going rogue, but I have no doubt AIs will be carefully surveilled. Not out of safety concerns--just because they'll have access to bank accounts so everything they do will be tracked online for targeted marketing aimed at AI bots... 😂

Many people have asked me which library I use for my simulations, and I didn't have an answer until now. Excited to share that I'm releasing algovivo, a JS + WASM library to simulate soft-bodied virtual creatures. demo: https://t.co/BAO8Zgh58h code: https://t.co/TpgVTWiMYu 🧵
