Here is a non-exhaustive list of anthropomorphic terms in current discourse around AI: - hallucination - memory - style - decision-making - interpretation - learning - understanding - recognition - comprehension - intelligence

A lot of the branding tricks are about deflecting responsibility from the humans behind the technologies and anchoring it on the model itself - which must first appear as an "agent" in order for the trick to work.

What is a "hallucination" if not a "bug" or "spreading false information" and "operating in a way that was not intended"?

We need to make an active effort to demystify the language we use to talk about these models and attend to the additional layers of fetish AI companies are enveloping their branding discourse with.

It's not a matter of policing speech, but of translating scientific research to forms and concepts that won't reproduce misunderstandings about technologies that the majority of people are witnessing for the first time.

As transformer models continue to grow in popularity beyond expert enclaves it becomes even more important to peel off the layers of anthropomorphism that are pervasive in the terminology. 🧵
