We carried out a correlation matrix analysis on literature reports of Cu dissolution. Here, cations seem to favor dissolution either via formation of dissolution precursors or by stabilizing dissolution complexes. Excess cations at the surface may enforce Cu re-deposition. (6/7)

Same descriptor applies also to hydrogen evolution! Activation energy for water dissociation correlates with cation-induced electrostatic potential. This descriptor is DEFINITELY unique! (5/7)

CO2 activation itself can be rationalized in terms of cation-induced potential: for bi- and tri-valent cations, cation-CO2 coordination number correlates with potential, as do the CO2 binding energy and the activation energy for CO coupling. (4/7)

Inspired by the Cation-Coupled Electron Transfer formalism, we realized that both the energy gain and electrostatic driving force for cation accumulation correlate with cation-induced electrostatic potential. Such descriptor is powerful, as it is derived from textbooks. (3/7)

Except for late transition metals, all the others do not require a cation to activate CO2, thanks to their shallow d-band center. Besides, surface charging induces a d-band upshift with can convert “cation-assisted” elements as Au, Cu, Ag into “cation-independent one”. (2/7)
