4️⃣ Not just populism—identity populism Forza Italia, a populist but non-regionalist ally, had no effect on tax compliance. NL’s territorial identity narrative is the driver. Further, we find no effect on local taxes. Tax evasion targets the central government. 5/6

3️⃣ Main mechanism: rhetoric, not governance Effects are stronger where NL had higher vote share, more NL's TV channel coverage, & active street campaigns. RD shows no effect from simply electing an NL mayor. 4/6

2️⃣ Natural experiment: staggered local entry Exploiting 1990–2015 municipal elections, we find that NL’s entry into local races cut compliance with the TV license fee by 0.16pp/year. Estimates are robust to different estimators that account for threatment heterogeneity. 3/6

1️⃣ Identity rhetoric erodes tax compliance We show that Italy’s Northern League, by framing national taxes as illegitimate “theft” from the North, reduced payment of the TV license fee—a symbolic, centrally collected tax. 2/6

It’s been a long and rewarding journey — luckily, I had @Fra_Barilari by my side! I learned so much from him, and from everyone who shared feedback, offered comments, and showed their support. Now it’s out in @EJ_RES: [ https://t.co/saM4ELhkvd]

Curious about how prison type affects recidivism for women? In our new paper with @Giammacco , @gmastrob, and Daniele Terlizzese, we compare women-only prisons with female sections in male institutions, leveraging quasi-random assignment in Italy 🇮🇹.
🚨New paper on a neglected topic: women in jail. In most countries, women are held in female sections of male prisons or in women-only prisons. Using data from Italy and quasi-random assignment, we find women-only prisons cut recidivism by up to 16pp. https://t.co/IOlLtHuLmc
