People stealing texts from others deserve losing their place in academia for at least two reasons: 1) it's a crime; 2) it's an immensely *stupid* crime. Everything is out there, in the open. One day sometime is bound to notice. And then reputation is over, there is no way back.
A senior scientist @ucl, takes our paper, re-writes it changing words slightly but enough not to be detected by #plagiarism software, leaves all descriptions down to the tiniest details the same, and publishes it under their own name in PubMed. Apparently, this is OK

Awesome collection of papers on facial expressions and emotion edited by @NSushi For those who can read Japanese. Fortunately, there is also one article in English whose author would be happy if you take a look ;)

Looking forward to today's live Q&A session FRT72: Creating Human-Robot Relationships @underlineio. In our paper, we designed a mirror affective representation of a user with heart-rate interoception enhancement and visual representations. #roman2020 #ieee

Completely agree with this. @jeremyphoward pointed this out in @lexfridman's podcast. As an ML engineer its extremely frustrating, try finding literature for Tabular data (what most companies have), there is the Entity Embeddings paper and that is it. https://t.co/tJyzCglJcz

The community’s hyperfocus on novel methods ignores what's really important.

These guidelines should be common sense, but so many reviewers try to be the first to report new findings by delaying or blocking similar research by any means 😣 When did those people lose their passion and excitement for research? #AcademicTwitter
Seems like a lot of people are working on their EMNLP reviews at the moment! Please remember that the following are NOT valid primary reasons for rejection, and the authors will be able to appeal to these guidelines in the rebuttal: https://t.co/JzLwEB9Z6l

Totally agree! This concept is one of the pieces of our “Robot Mirroring” framework to foster well-being through (self-) empathy with artificial agents. @febendo @DrDiegoPaez @DrMarisabel @toyoxx
An interesting article on what I call "the curse of metacognition", i.e. the idea that being aware of a behavior or symptom may not be enough to change it.

Super useful :)
Two new websites that I'll be keeping handy for the foreseeable future: 🙌 https://t.co/NqHc1WSge4: translates natural language inputs into bash commands using @TensorFlow 2.x 🐚 https://t.co/GjoE8yvRc3: beautiful, detailed manpage explanations for arbitrary shell commands

Unfortunately academia is designed in an asymmetric manner (for example peer review or recommendation letters) so that enemies have more influence than supporters.

Amen to that.
@pptsapper Serious piece of advice: do in-depth research into potential supervisors. The supervisor - student relationship can make or break a dissertation. An effective supervisor brings the best out of a student. A bad supervisor ruins everything.

Before we go to overkill with the "Encourage women to science! Black girls can Chemistry too! Algorithms are like cooking! Don't you like cooking?"🤦🏿♀️ Clean up your departments. You'll retain more women by eliminating *half* of your abusers, than by *doubling* women's conferences

The words of a president matter. And time and time again, Donald Trump has callously used his to incite violence, stoke the flames of hatred and division, and drive us further apart. We cannot give him another four years in the White House.

When all 57 Buffalo police officers on the emergency response team resign because two were suspended for knocking down a 75-year-old man and sending him to the hospital, this seems like an opportunity to find 57 new police officers who don't approve of assaulting senior citizens.
