Importantly, addressing both these gaps requires enhanced infrastructure and legislation to facilitate data access, enabling researchers to inform evidence-based policies.

When discussing social media and mental health, I stressed two key gaps: 1) the lack of causal research, and 2) the need for objective measures of social media use.

My presentation and the subsequent Q&A were part of a public hearing organized by SANT, the Subcommittee on Public Health (@EP_PublicHealth). The hearing focused on the challenges related to the well-being of children and young people.

I was reading Blashfield et al. (2014) 'The Cycle of Classification: DSM-I Through DSM-5' today and made a plot of the increasing numbers of diagnostic categories defined in each edition of the DSM over the years—quadrupling from 128 in DSM-I (1952) to 544 in DSM-5-TR (2022):

1 in 7 adolescents live with a #MentalHealth condition. Without adequate support, these conditions can have long-lasting effects on their education, relationships, and overall well-being. We’re calling on countries to invest in effective age-appropriate mental health services
