Today we welcomed the local community to hear about this year’s #excavation season and some preliminary results from each of the project directors and supervisors, including a tour of the macellum!

Week 3 wrap-up! Several new features revealed in the macellum, helping us piece together earlier phases. Trenches were extended in the forum taberna and domus to explore new spatial relationships.

Spotlight on tech! 📡 We use #aerial #imagery to create orthophotos, crucial for understanding #excavation features & areas within Falerii Novi’s urban landscape. Digital GPS and GIS precisely document special find locations and monitor context changes on-site 📍

Spotlight on FNP #environmental #archaeology 🌿🌰 Enviro sampling is a key aspect of the project! Flotation is used to separate light organic materials like seeds from heavier residues, which are sorted to identify archaeological materials related to landscape & foodways 🔎

Excavations are underway at the ancient Roman town of Falerii Novi! ⛏️ Over 40 students/researchers from the UK and Europe are making new discoveries about the 2000-year old settlement. This week, the team uncovered the walls of a taberna (shop) and a well-worn road 👇

Week 1 at @FaleriiNovi is seeing good progress. Excavations in a taberna on the northern flank of the forum - lots of use, reuse and several architectural phases - and training in drone orthophoto.

One of our participants, Medi Jones-Williams (@BristolAnthArch), is taking over each week to provide updates! Our on-site ceramicists have their hands full already! Pottery is reshaping our understanding of #FaleriiNovi’s chronology & economy, incl daily life & foodways!🏺

Excavation season 2024 has begun! This year we’re digging across Area 1 (macellum), Area 2 (domus), and Area 5 (forum tabernae). Day 2 we’ve got walls, floors, & a road among other features - stay tuned for more! Led by @the_bsr @instclasstudies @harvardclassics @UofTClassics
