$27 Billion documented fines and fees debt is the tip of the iceberg and evidence that using fines and fees for revenue is not only cruel but also counterproductive economic policy.

The dramatic increase in traffic enforcement in Buffalo “coincides with a push by the Mayor and Common Council to raise revenue to close budget shortfalls”. Sounds just like Ferguson.

Recent findings reveal Buffalo unlawfully issued $1.84 million in tickets as part of its notoriously unjust — and now defunct — speed camera program. Jalonda Hill & Phylicia Brown of @FairFinesBflo spell out why this money must be returned to residents: https://t.co/oxnjh09fmE

Yesterday Buffalo repealed several fees put in place 2 years ago that often added hundreds of dollars to the cost of a traffic ticket. This is a step in the right direction toward ending Buffalo's unjust & harmful fines & fees policies. Congats to local advocates @FairFinesBflo!

I thank @BFLO_CC for passing the repeal of 15 vehicle fees. School zone cams & other tech solutions made these ordinances obsolete. It was introduced earlier this summer as part of my #BuffaloReformAgenda which is making #Buffalo a more just & equitable City for Black residents.

Freedom to drive = power to survive. No one should be denied access to basic human needs just because they can't afford to pay a fine. New York is on the verge of ending the widespread practice of taking away people's licenses simply for traffic debt. https://t.co/pTuwwXKX4m
