FFFC believes transparency and accountability are essential to fairness in our justice system, and that ticketing should not be used solely to generate revenue.

The push to reimagine #mandatedreporting increasingly has a new question: Is less, not more, better?
bostonglobe.com
Mandated reporting in Massachusetts disproportionately targets families of color, who, state data show, are more than twice as likely to have reports of suspected abuse and neglect filed against them...

🚨NEW🚨 first-of-its-kind national survey on fines and fees from @FinesandFeesJC & @WilsonCSJ_ shows impacts of fines and fees are being felt **nationwide** w/ 61% of people experienced at least one essential hardship e.g. food & housing. Key findings👇 https://t.co/krLQvasrR0

The new report exposes a stark reality: for millions of working families, money needed for necessities, such as food, housing, healthcare and transportation, is being redirected to pay off court...

Why Daniel Cameron might be Kentucky's perfect choice for governor (not in a good way) @courierjournal

The Booker T Washington example is instructive for therein lies Cameron’s current appeal in Kentucky. He’s perfect for the state!

In the latest episode of Justice Above All, Dr. Kesha Moore traces the history of criminal and civil fines and fees and outlines how localities are fining some of their poorest residents as a way to generate revenue for their budgets.

Imagine this: You accidentally park your car illegally. A police officer issues two citations and a $250 fine. In addition to the $250 you now owe, there are fees associated with processing the fine...

Data confirms what we always knew about Black folks being disproportionately stopped by the police in #Buffalo. Cheers to the activists who are continuing to fight. @BLRRBuffalo @FairFinesBflo @theCCR @wnylawcenter

$27 Billion documented fines and fees debt is the tip of the iceberg and evidence that using fines and fees for revenue is not only cruel but also counterproductive economic policy.
We’re sharing our favorite research on the criminal justice system from 2021 in case you missed it. Next up, from @FinesandFeesJC: “How Much Criminal Justice Debt Does the U.S. Really Have?” https://t.co/PNtt6H6Q5I

The dramatic increase in traffic enforcement in Buffalo “coincides with a push by the Mayor and Common Council to raise revenue to close budget shortfalls”. Sounds just like Ferguson.
Fewer 911 calls to @BPDAlerts, but a lot more traffic stops - mostly in minority neighborhoods. https://t.co/e54lxoOMoH

Recent findings reveal Buffalo unlawfully issued $1.84 million in tickets as part of its notoriously unjust — and now defunct — speed camera program. Jalonda Hill & Phylicia Brown of @FairFinesBflo spell out why this money must be returned to residents: https://t.co/oxnjh09fmE

After reading this excellent @AlexesHarris piece on Daunte Wright and revenue-motivated traffic enforcement, I looked at the data and found cities that rely more on fines and fees for their budgets kill more Black people. https://t.co/EeB2ks69u7

Yesterday Buffalo repealed several fees put in place 2 years ago that often added hundreds of dollars to the cost of a traffic ticket. This is a step in the right direction toward ending Buffalo's unjust & harmful fines & fees policies. Congats to local advocates @FairFinesBflo!
I thank @BFLO_CC for passing the repeal of 15 vehicle fees. School zone cams & other tech solutions made these ordinances obsolete. It was introduced earlier this summer as part of my #BuffaloReformAgenda which is making #Buffalo a more just & equitable City for Black residents.

Freedom to drive = power to survive. No one should be denied access to basic human needs just because they can't afford to pay a fine. New York is on the verge of ending the widespread practice of taking away people's licenses simply for traffic debt. https://t.co/pTuwwXKX4m
