Please believe the most powerful men in the world when they tell you openly that their plan is to constantly surveil everyone all of the time and to record everything in centralised personal data registries for state and corporate access using digital-ID and AI. #DigitalDystopia

“People will be on their best behavior because we’re constantly watching/recording everything.” A breathtakingly naïve response to surveillance/digital IDs. It assumes govt is always benevolent & its rules always just. History shows the opposite. It's a fast-track to tyranny.

The Westminster eForum on next steps for digital identities raised some interesting questions. @strategistmag analyzes whether moves to mandate reusable digital IDs and any ‘one size fits all’ would be a mistake: https://t.co/uzL1ewCPxb

Thank you @phat_controller for inviting me to talk about my book for the new @IDS_UK podcast. I enjoyed exploring the prioritisation of #digitalidentity in the intl dev sector & highlighting the problems that can arise with the en masse registration of marginalised people. #SDGs

The UK's new digital identity & attributes trust framework & legislative proposals "will lay the groundwork for the increased acceptance of digital identities across the [country]." Public trust in these systems remains a major problem. #digitalidentity

Today we argued that by the next #2024WCS conference #digitalidentity will become THE central theme in global debates on citizenship rights, nationality deprivation & statelessness. The turnout today & incredible debate suggests that we are not mistaken. @mariannedh #2024WCS

Digital infrastructures are complex, contradictory and problematic. They can work well but if weaponised, poorly conceived and/or driven by outsider interests they run the risk of becoming downright dangerous. @ConversationUK https://t.co/S1RnnEaGeD

When it comes to civil registrations, some states are using exclusionary mechanisms to block anyone it considers undesirable, as happened to Dominicans of Haitian descent.

#DigitalID isn’t about inclusion, it’s about those left behind, invisibilised & excluded. There is ample evidence that digital infrastructures can have dire (un)intended consequences for documented people w/ VALID claims to citizenship. Think statelessness, Windrush, etc

I firmly oppose the government’s plans for compulsory digital ID cards. This is an affront to our civil liberties, and will make the lives of minorities even more difficult and dangerous. It is excessive state interference — and must be resisted.

Having studied #digitalID in depth for my PhD and written a book about it - this is already proven to be a TERRIBLE idea. We have been warning the UK government about the dangers of digital ID for years. And no one wants to listen.

To stay afloat, my local bakery is now selling its cheapest bread at £5.50. I can’t afford to buy it, they can’t afford to sell it. This country is so screwed 😭
