A raver keeps dancing after the party is over. Even when no one is around. On street corners, in your bedroom, in the forest. With friends at home or in your car. Whatever you do right now to be safe, don’t stop movin’...

DJ’s: If you don’t share your track ids for new/reissued music, pls consider doing so. If you have real style and technique, no one can copy you off your track lists. The little labels supporting emerging artists and/or pressing vinyl need our help to survive and grow. 💗🌷

I spent decades making music that few people heard. It always mattered to me. It was important to me. It helped me survive & see myself. It doesn’t matter if it was good or completely unique or whatever. It was for me. Still is. Everyone should make music if they want to.

One of the coolest things about dj mixes is that they are like one of the only examples of a long play format that has remained popular. Listening closely to a 60 min mix requires a sustained degree of attention. They are meditative symphonies. We get lost in the groove.

Touring DJs: you you may be able to influence who plays before you & with you at events. If equalization efforts are important to you, this is one area you can exert some pressure. When you get a request, find a great local that needs support & try to get them on the bill too.

The most fundamental technique of mixing house & techno is beat matching to hold blends. When we do workshops I always encourage folks to not touch the eq & effects until they become proficient with holding the records tight & blending the tracks with volume changes alone.🥏💙🥏

Would be cool if bigger publications did an in-depth piece on rave sound systems. Not the deconstructed things hanging from rafters in clubs these days, but the high-pressure mobile systems maintained around the world by small crews. That tech is important to what comes next.

Don’t listen to people who say there are too many musicians/artists. That’s what the dominator wants us to believe: that music is a gift in the hands of a few. Not true. The world needs as much healing art as we can create. And there aren’t too many DJs if people dance more.

Media about trans people is just unreal. Keep it simple: Let trans & non binary people express & define what we need to be ok & believe us. Gender/sex isn’t as straight-forward as the Victorians thought & that’s a-ok. World is better with us in it. We’re part of the human story.

House music is ritual trance music; it is the ecstatic union of body, spirit, and machine fueled by the power of love, set to an archaic pulse, and quantized to a steady clock. We use it to deprogram ourselves, connect with our nature, and find others like us.

Helena Hauff is always awesome. Saw her for the first time in a while last night. She started with some amazing Djax record I don’t know and went from there. And she’s still 100% committed to vinyl after years of touring and a hard serious player. Respect to her.

Residents should always be listed by name on flyers in the same font size as other DJs. There would be no “headliners” without the local scenes that originally nurtured them. Clubs are just Venues unless they invest in local talent. Residents foster the artistic culture of clubs.

So much joyous music is made by people who struggle & experience intense pain. The joy is defiant. It is radiant because it expresses resilience, a person’s strength & their community values. It is powerful b/c it is a catharsis.

Do ravers still dream of the future? Have a-holes (like the one who runs this platform) stolen our collective technological dreams? In 1990s we thought AI, the web, techno were revolutionary technologies—they were & are—but as the world burns the promise of tech seems illusory?

When did the term “opener” start being used for the DJs that start the party? I’ve been playing since ‘94 but only started hearing the term “opener” for a DJ around 2012. I think that term is borrowed from rock culture & for me doesn’t fit the prerogatives of the club/rave.

No one has ever asked me even once how I feel as a trans woman about being called womxn. One of my main struggles is to be respected & seen as a woman, so when people alter the word cause I am around (to “include” me) it feels really bad. Pls comment only if you are transgender.

Can rave save the world? No. But it can transform the lives of individuals & communities. It can reestablish a connection to nature once severed by colonialism/rationalism/organized religion/ideology. It provides us with a direct experience. Binds us together. Activates bodies.

Reading that tracks are getting shorter as I listen to an 11 min tune i am working on (which Maya just referred to as my typical “smoker’s length” on a 1st bounce). I love getting lost in a groove. The extended length of dance tunes is magical for listening & a dream for blending

I got into dance music for a few reasons, not the least of which was to find other people who wanted to crack themselves open on a dance floor. I think ravers are some of the coolest people, even if there are bad eggs in the lot. I found most of my best friends through the music.

Techno is not merely a vision of “future music.” We use it for all the reasons people have used music since pre-history: to form social bonds, for ritual ecstasy, to access a trance-like state, to heal, to connect with ancestral memory, to assert cultural identity, etc.

Psychedelics show me that on a deep level things are connected, but NOT unified in this world. In your psychedelic visions u see the trauma of culture & the utter power of symbols & language to shape thought. We must use that special perspective to change the world not escape it.

As fun as it is to watch a great DJ, music really comes alive when I limit other stimulation. I can’t recommend enough spending some time at a party dancing into a speaker, or grooving w/ your eyes closed (as long as there is room around u), or getting down while u face a friend.

People associate Chicago with House, but as someone who came up in the 90s rave scene there, I can testify that techno was huge at warehouse/loft parties. The “Chicago techno” has roots in productions by LiL Louis (Video Clash), K-Alexi (My Medusa), DJ Rush, Relief Records etc

Psychedelics have been used by humans for at least 60,000 years to behold something mystical & penetrating. I don’t think we should let the sick culture we are born into rob us of the ability to peek behind the veil. Or let culture de-power our subjective spiritual experiences.

It is possible to view dance music culture as a mere product if all you know of it is media created. But we know this: there are tens (100s?) of thousands people on this planet using the music to de-program social norms, find their friends, and live in a different way.

It isn’t retrograde to make “rave” music with its roots in the 90s cause that music went through so many changes so fast & production was inaccessible to most. It is unsurprising that creative people go back & mine that history to further explore eclipsed ideas & technology.

I hear stories about US DJs & their weed. I guess I join the ranks. I very genuinely love smoking while I mix & scratch. Arthur Russell said the THC opens your ears. I agree. In the States most of my DJ friends love to blaze & mix for hours. Part of the practice ritual I think.

The scene would die if not for all the small crews & promo teams that do it just to create something special in their city. They might lose $$ but they do it to see local artists grow, to provide a place for people like us to commune with the Beat, & to support music they love.💗

Whether it is sex, dancing or “drugs”, a prime goal is boundary dissolution. If we maintain absolute control/composure we are not doing it right. Your ego is there to protect you, but it will keep u a safe little child if you allow it. Let go of control & you may become stronger.

Genuine advice for all organizers is don’t build a stage unless you absolutely must. A rave is about the connective flow between dancefloor, music, & medium (the DJ). It is so dope to just play on the floor & be in the party w/ everyone. Plus stages are a 100% nightmare 4 vinyl.

I think once a DJ steps up to the mixer that mixer is “theirs” for the set. If a sound person feels that the main volume needs to be turned up or that levels are too hot, they should wait until the blend is fully transformed and then speak to the DJ—NOT reach over us during a mix

White supremacy is marketing music w/ roots in black & queer culture, while u stick a high price tag on it & ask a few POC & Queer people to play. Organizations should reflect diverse leadership in this industry. Anti-blackness isn’t just in line-ups, it is how business is done.

Had so many problems with decks lately we said fuck it & brought our own to SR. Those were our PLX-1000s mounted on Isonoe feet. The monitors were loud with NO delay, so we could mix tight and actually build heat ‘n’ NrG, instead of internal frustration. 8.5 hours felt short.✨

Drums and percussion — just a part of what makes 90s club/house/techno tracks so special. Lots of energy in the midrange. Whether the first few Sharp releases, or the great early Touché, or Nice N Ripe, or deeper stuff like Rasoul or techno like Carl Craig’s remixes 93-95…

One of the most powerful things about the rituals we call “parties,” “raves” and “undergrounds” is that our attention is focused on actual lived experience. What we experience together is both communal (collective) & profoundly subjective (your own memories, traumas, emotions).

If you see someone who looks tired or has been dancing hard for a long time, hand them a bottle of water. It is a simple gesture but can make a huge difference for a person. DJs need it too. Hydration is super important when you are partying. It is easy to forget to drink H2O.

A few straight-forward tips if you are frustrated trying to mix vinyl: Keep your hand on the pitch even if you think the tempo is locked: ride it don’t set it. Keep one ear in the headphone listening for most of the mix. Monitors should be at head level & close enough to touch.

Big fan of the “long blend.” When I mix I love to use a combination of mostly long blends (1-3 min average) & some shorter “hot” mixes (32-64 beats). My inspiration for long blends were underground DJs like Justin Long & my inspiration for quick blends were radio hot mixers.

Playing a record can be a time machine to the past. But it can also unlock a before untapped potential in a record. Suppose you made a record & it didn’t get a lot of play or exposure? But 20 years later DJs find it & make it a new classic? Like a 🗝waiting for the right lock.

Rave dancing involves a surrender. You let the beat into your body. It is penetrating. Like sex. Boundary dissolving. Not everyone seeks out this experience. Not everyone knows how. To give yourself to the beat, this is a union with something external & non-material.

When it comes to mixing records on turntables, if you want to correct sync issues before anyone hears it the technique I recommend is to: 1 keep one hand on the pitch at almost all times 2 keep one ear in the can (headphone) while you blend with a dry 1-channel signal as the cue

DJs have to trust their sense of what’s good. It is a process over time. It is a skill because we have to learn to ignore other messages. If u love it, if it moves your heart, if it makes u dance, if it suspends time in its grip, or if it attaches a memory to it, pay attention.

Samples, drops & breaks are interesting because they ARE reused, not in spite of that. We keep using the ones that resonate. Could a rhythm be charged through reuse? Could it become sacred by passing through all these machines? Could it become part of a community through dance?

Today most of us will be as triggered & alone feeling as any other day, just with more fireworks. Trans people are very visible right now in the media & we are targets. We need actual concern, check-ins from friends, jobs, protective legislation, income, health care etc to be ok.

Big pharma isn’t making money off trans people in a meaningful way. We are a relatively small demographic and most of our medicines are written off script. The idea that trans healthcare is a corporate imperative/initiative is a deep misunderstanding of the situation.

I am, and will always be, a raver. Pardon the morbidity, but when I die I want to be entombed in my record collection. Like an empress. “Here lies Eris Drew, encased in 8,000 vinyl records. Rave on.”

To be clear, I don’t have a neutral position regarding Kravitz. Her comments replying to @frankiefatgold are racist. I talk about appropriation in interviews because it is an important issue. If techo/rave has any vitality it must be an intrumentality of change.

Was so excited when I found out @CrackMagazine wanted to do a cover feature in honor my forthcoming album, “Quivering In Time” on @T4TLUVNRG . Thank you to writer @chalravens for the serious interview and for your words about my work.

One time on a flight I gave a “nice” person my email address cause she was very friendly. Within a day she sent me message about god & his love & about making peace with myself. I wrote her back and told her the goddess was rising & that the Motherbeat is real. Never heard back.

No corners should be cut for DJ monitoring. If u plan to use tops in the booth—which usually only can output down to 50 Hz—u need to also have subs in the booth directly under the tops for low bass. A full range speaker should go down to at least 30Hz if u don’t plan to use subs.

“Filter house” is one of these styles for which there is a core of amazing music for true diggers. Mike Delgado’s “Byrd Man’s Revenge” is such a tune. It is transcendentally beautiful ritual trance music, relying on subtle harmonic shifts to transport u 💕

Someday we’ll shake our heads and say to people younger than us, “that club mate was one hell of a drug.”

Played for 6.5 hrs yesterday at @nowadaysnyc for M_Sunday. Thx to @octo_octa for the impromptu b2b at the end! The set was intended as a full psychedelic cycle with stages of conflict, difficulty, memory, ecstasy, embodiment. Maya was there to reintegrate the experience via love.

Someone joked “I wouldn’t be part of any club that would have me as a member”. People invest in that terrible idea w/o realizing it. Try not to. Invest in people around u. Look for strengths/talents in friends—Don’t wait for others to recognize. Tell friends their work matters.

I used to think ear plug came between me and the music in a way I didn’t like. Most soft fit plugs are muffling but musician plugs do sound amazing once you get used to them. They are called “musician plugs” but serious ravers should not hesitate to get custom plugs with filters.
