Y'all, my advisor
@leahsom
has received the highest teaching award Harvard offers: a Harvard College Professorship! It's a 5-year appointment awarded to only 5 faculty each year across all of FAS for exceptional contributions to ugrad teaching, mentorship, & culture. CONGRATS! 🎉
I'm still developing as an academic advisor, but a few techniques I've observed that help when giving writing feedback: (i) labeled praise. Tell the advisee when you see something you like and *why* you like it. We learn A LOT from these moments & they make critique easier to

In case anyone is feeling down about rejections, I wanted to share that I applied to 14 jobs and got 13 rejections + 1 interview/offer (7% hit rate, but that 1 hit is my literal dream job). It's easy to think that a rejection = failure, but things can def work out. You got this❤️
Honored to share two recent updates: The

Just submitted my first grant for my new lab! A small foundation grant, but feels good to be dreaming of fun ideas we can be working on in the coming years... Fingers crossed!
Today my undergrad thesis w
@AjayBSatpute
& Kevin Ochsner (
@ColumbiaSCANLab
) was accepted at
@affectScience
*ten full years* after we ran the studies. Sometimes science is slow, ideas have to be refined, and projects have to be juggled. Don't give up - persistence pays off!!!
My first solo-author paper is now published! In it, I summarize what we do/don't know about youth emotion differentiation (the ability to specifically identify emotions). V relevant for clin, dev, and affective researchers. See Box 1 & thread for summary!
My undergrad thesis was published in
@affectScience
today!
@AjayBSatpute
, Kevin Ochsner
@ColumbiaSCANLab
, and I found that naming emotions actually makes it HARDER to regulate them. We replicated this curious finding in order to believe it. Thread below.
Overflowing with gratitude for my postfdoc year with
@dylanggee
and all the incredible folks in the
@Yale
CANDLab. Such a brilliant and kind crew doing unbelievable work. I’ve learned so much and will cherish my time here. Thank you for everything!!
I've told several folks this week "if this feels hard, that's because it *is* hard." Doing science is extremely cognitively & emotionally difficult even in the *best* of times. So feelings of difficulty or struggle (esp now) are natural, not signs of weakness or inadequacy.
I am so so so impressed by these PhD applicants. Y’all are stunninggggg. Narrowing it down is going to be so hard… Q for senior folks: Is it a bad idea to take on a dozen brilliant students my first year????
There’s nothing quite like being stared at and called a pedophile while holding hands w your boyfriend on the NYC subway to remind you why we need

Pleased to share a new review paper in Affective Science on the Promise of Affective Language for Identifying and Intervening on Psychopathology. Was fun to review this lit for the upcoming Future of Affective Science special issue.
New preprint showing that emotion differentiation buffers adolescents from anxiety/depression when stressed (in a joint EMA+monthly intensive longitudinal study)! Fun working with inimitable

@arodman123
, Patrick Mair, & Kate McLaughlin.
Excited to share a new paper arguing that 'narcissism' can be (i) understood as dysregulations in a natural self-esteem system, (ii) described using cognitive-behavioral concepts, and (iii) treated using CBT skills. Early (but I think exciting) ideas!
New preprint with
@HayoungAhn
,
@JSchleiderPhD
, and
@leahsom
! We find that language becomes both more psychologically distanced and more *abstract* when regulating emotions. Results nicely align with Construal Level Theory and extend lang-emotion relations!
New preprint and first solo author paper!
I review what we do and do not know about emotion differentiation (a key emotional skill) in youth. Lots of ideas & future directions for any researchers studying differentiation. Email feedback or relevant pubs!
New paper from our team used an emotion vocabulary assessment to capture how ~200 people aged 4-25 define 27 emotion words! Emotion words were comprehended by age 11, but definition of emotions as *abstract* states continued to develop through adolescence
Woot woot! Dissertation defense is officially scheduled for 5/13 at 3pm! It's open to the public, so if you'd like to learn about how we can use language to best regulate our emotions, send me a DM and I'll pass along the link :)
#COVID18ThesisDefense
The fact that visa holders are no longer facing deportation is a really fantastic outcome, but 2 important things. 1) The possibility of coming/staying in the US should never have been a matter of debate and 2) merely threatening to upend one's future plans is extremely damaging.
Being queer has taught me to be genuine and brave. Being queer has given me the strength to fight for equality and the humility to upend the many privileges I hold. This

Beyond grateful to all the scientists who worked tirelessly for this moment. The end is in sight!! (Was able to get it early due to staffing the Psych ER).
SO STOKED that we can announce that
@PsychPrinceton
made THREE hires this year!! I'll be starting along with the inimitable

I am joined by not one, but TWO brilliant new faculty 🥳
@RebeccaCarey_
will launch her lab in summer 2021, and
@ErikNook
in summer 2022. Looking forward to joining the Princeton Psych community!
I was once stalked, followed home by a man, while I was out in drag. I‘ve heard the spine chilling “f****t” too many times. THIS MONTH the Supreme Court is deciding our right to adopt and ~3 trans women will be murdered. Celebrate gains, yes, but never forget the fight

Hey all! I'm Erik (he/him), and I'm a gay clinical psych PhD student
@Harvard
. I study how language and emotion interact: E.g., How people use words to understand and manage what they feel, and how these skills develop in kids+teens. Follow/see below for more info!
Oh my goodness, so grateful for this recognition! Wow!! Huge thanks also to coauthors
@leahsom
,
@mk_nock
, and
@derrickhull
! And an equally huge CONGRATS to the other award winners!!!! What an all star cast <3
CONGRATULATIONS to all our

@jkmaccormack
for Best Dissertation Award,
@katiehgreenaway
for our Early Career Award, &
@aa_marsh
for our Mid-Career Award. Celebrating with you all!
Society has come far since I was in high school. (2003-2008 I was crying/praying every night that God would turn me straight). Thx to good frnds+fam, I'm now out and proud. It's easy to think that it's gotten better for all of us, but these stats say otherwise. We have work to do
Just YESTERDAY while reviewing a video of me doing therapy I said “Wow, I sound so... gay,” and my supervisor patiently helped me unpack my own judgments. Turns out peer taunts from a childhood in rural Iowa leave echoes that are hard to silence, even after becoming so...
I have been asked by trainees how I am so comfy in my own skin. But today I spent time worrying about the sound of my voice on a zoom recording, and spotted some internal heterosexism. Take home point: the process is incremental and being comfy with yourself is easier in joggers.
Twittersphere:
@Sakiera_Hudson
and I are curious who are fabulous people in the humanities (soc/anthro/phil/hist/art/linguistics/etc) who are studying affect/emotion, have great work, and give 🔥 talks? Recs / self-noms must appreciated! Plz retweet!
So many congrats to
@ErikNook
on receiving an

@YalePsychology
will examine the neural mechanisms supporting emotion differentiation and its associations with well-being. Over the moon to embark on this exciting work together! 🧠🤓🎉
I'm so so glad we can now share that
@RebeccaCarey_
will ALSO be starting as a new faculty member at

Doctoral regalia is *wildly* expensive. Why I plan to follow
@betsylevyp
's lead and purchase a set of robes for the lab that students can use for free.
I just looked at the price for regalia at my university and I’m shook.
Talked to two friends and they gave reasons as to why they bought it or why they didn’t.
Now I’m curious about others’ experiences with this. Did you buy your doctoral regalia? Why?
