Wait a second...but we’ve always done 16 x 110s. Don’t tell Christian McCaffrey...I love it when athletes can articulate the training process better than the “professionals”
If hard work was truly THE secret to success then there’d be a lot more millionaires and more football teams not named the Patriots winning the Super Bowl. Hard work is a component of success and can actually be detrimental to it when not complimented by intelligent processes.
Before you invest in "hacks" why don't you try
✅ 7-9 hours of sleep
✅ Quality protein, veggies/fruit, healthy fats
✅ Lifting weights 2-3x/week
✅ >=120 min of Zone 2
✅ Build & sustain healthy relationships
✅ Mental health practice
✅ Early & frequent sun exposure
Coffee lovers, pay attention.
A recent analysis with over 400k people found that drinking 2-3 cups of ground, instant, or decaffeinated coffee/day is associated with a significant reduction in CVD and all-cause mortality vs. never drinking coffee (PMID: 36162818).
Coffee wins!
In 2017, I was the Dir of Sports Science for an NFL team, and I was exhausted & unhealthy.
This is what I changed to get in the best shape of my life in my 40s.
I was doing the “right” things 80% of the time, but overwhelming stress and my inability to positively adapt to
Naps are a powerful High Performance Habit for boosting performance. The key is duration and timing. Use this as a guideline to optimize your next nap.
Toughness is task-specific. Training like a Navy SEAL won't develop the specific resilience required to excel at public speaking, being an NFL QB, or world-class chef. Training like a SEAL will prepare you to be a SEAL.

Finished in August, walked today. Thank you
@UKAthletics
for allowing me to pursue a doctoral degree while I was coaching! Also thank you
@universityofky
for footing most of the bill! On to the next challenge.
I love podcasts but it’s impossible to train heavy and listen to anyone talk about anything. I just need beats. Anyone with me?
Low intensity aerobic = podcast
Weights = beats
If this is true, this represents a paradigm shift in coaching. Kudos to Saban and others who continue to innovate and tweak their process. Never copy a model, because when you do you copy the errors. Be your own person, apply principles and iterate often.
NOT a max day, just a regular training session. Genuine enthusiasm to train and to support their teammates. This is why we do the job. Proud of these guys, the HP staff and our FB coaches. We are in it together

People are stuck with the thought of, “This is what we did when we won before”. To me that is the first step towards mediocrity. Learn from the past and progress towards the future. (2/2)
Finally! Someone else is putting it out there!

15+ years training Olympic gold medalists, NFL, & NCAA football players…and my workouts are stupid boring & still yielding results at 43.
Last Dexa: +4.5lb lean mass in 6 mo
Here’s my plan:
Resistance train 3 x per week.
Each workout consists of:
1-2 power exercises

Don't listen to the noise.
People said I was crazy when I duct-taped GPS trackers on athletes' pads over a decade ago.
Not so crazy now. Trust your gut and forge your path.
The starting point is key - how frequent, how hard, how long? I think every coach should be uncomfortable with how little they do the first week. Evaluate and iterate from there. Don’t burn the cake

According to Psychology professor, Dr. Gail Matthews, you are 42% more likely to achieve your goals by writing them down. Why? It brings clarity to the decision-making process, and it forces you to strategize for how you will achieve your goals.
If true, this is another reason why sport culture is irrational. Unless the ATC was hurting the athletes, were all factors considered - age of athletes, hydration, travel, physical prep, nutrition, maladaptation to psychophysiological stress, bad luck?
There is a biological reason why you can't sustain intense focus for long periods of time. When I learned why, and then how to arrange my day to take advantage of this, it 10x my productivity.
Mental toughness is task-specific! Doing generally difficult things will give you confidence that you can do hard stuff, but it won’t make you tough in executing the skill of your sport when it matters most!
Amazing 24 hours. Competed for a World Championship in Jiu Jitsu, and lost to the champion.
Learned a lot about myself:
- Reaffirmed I can do hard things
- I am calm in the storm
- I can trust my training
- I have more to learn
- I am blessed with an amazing community
This is how the best do it...in simple terms, don’t start with your favorite exercises, what does elite performance look like and reverse engineer the process
If you don’t understand the destination, it’s nearly impossible to get there. We need to start at the end and reverse engineer.

Success does not occur overnight. Do GOOD work, stick to the process and with a little luck, you will be recognized for your hard work.

You are either a thermometer or a thermostat.
You're either changing your environment (e.g., relationships, organization) for good, or you're sitting back and letting things happen.
It's your choice.

Literally have coaches from all over the world traveling to the burg to see what all the fuss is about. Proud of these coaches and players.

Freddie said it...love the wisdom in these remarks. Pay attention S&C Coaches. We need more teachers and less cartoon characters with alter egos.
🔊 Some of the Worst Football Coaches are the Loudest
💬 “If you’ve ever been around a loud coach, one that just screams & yells, listen to what he’s saying & see if he’s even teaching.”
💬 “We have players that need to be taught & we need teachers.”

Fill your cup with:
- Gratitude
- Sleep
- Nourishing foods
- Exercise you enjoy
Then you will have a reservoir to pour yourself out in service to others.

the 3 biggest addictions are Heroin, Carboydrates, & a monthly salary. By relying on your employer (primary customer) as your only source of income, you are living in a false economy of safety. You need other vertical revenue streams!
If you want to know how we are doing things from a physical preparation standpoint
@TribeAthletics
Read this!! Just got a call from a Hall of Fame Coach, out of the blue, and he said we are “Spot On”
Napping 101
1. Duration is less than 1 ultradian 90 min cycle, with 30 min being ideal
2. Don’t nap past 3 pm, or it can disrupt your nocturnal sleep pattern
3. You don’t have to fall asleep to get the benefits of napping
In my estimation, this is a huge gap in physical preparation & team/combat sport tech/tact preparation. Athletes aren’t exposed to the intensity of the event until the event and then we wonder why they seem “out of shape”.

but we are not using it in a testing format. Difference is offense does a set number of plays while defense rest then vice versa. Sprint whistle to whistle jog back rest varies between reps.

One thing that separates the elite from the average is a quality you can develop.
I fundamentally agree with this article. The standards for S&C coaches must be raised. I believe the entry point credentialing process needs to be more rigorous, and ultimately more Universities need to offer graduate degrees in…
