Like all Criterion covers, Astra Zero's beautiful Querelle artwork was created by a 100% human artist. No AI has been used in this, or any, Criterion design. We remain committed to the talent and creativity of the illustration community.
Artwork I made for the
@Criterion
release of Querelle, shout out to Eric for such a fun project.

Hi! I'm looking to expand my rolodex of storyboard artists. Particularly interested in expressive/loose/unexpected stylists and artists versed in classic/arthouse film grammar. Portfolio links will be greatly appreciated!
Yesterday I learned that I will be this year's recipient of
@soi128
's Richard Gangel Art Director award. I'm honored and humbled and deeply grateful to everyone at the Society. Thank you all!
Rob Jones & the crew at Mondo not only made great posters, they changed the course of movie poster design in the 21st century like no one else. It’s the end of an era. I’m excited to see whatever they do next.
I'm particularly proud of this set and can't wait for folks to get a chance to see it in person. It's one of those where the physicality of the box really adds something, I think.
...documentaries on Pasolini’s life & career featuring archival interviews; a '66 episode of Cinéastes de notre temps; interviews with filmmakers & scholars; a 100-page book featuring writing by James Quandt & writings & drawings by Pasolini; a new cover by

There's a 2-second camera zoom in Flavor of Green Tea over rice and I swear to God all of us in the Criterion screening room that day gasped in excitement.
This monster has been months in the making—so exciting that it's finally out in the world! Check out this packaging sneak preview with work from 16 unimpeachable artists!
Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films, 1954–1975 is a colossal set, and we’d have it no other way for our 1000th release! We can’t wait to share it with you when it roars into stores on Blu-ray on October 29. Take a look inside!
Action Journalism is out TODAY!
If you can, please consider purchasing a copy today, so that
@MiklosFelvideki
and I can keep telling stories with these characters that we love.
I ask this once every few years but whatever happened to Rachel Friere? The cartoonist, not the costume designer. She was my favorite artist for awhile.
21 years in, I figured it was time to finally make one proper movie poster with the big movie star heads and everything. Glad it could be for this delightful, crowd-pleasing film, which deserves a big audience.
I find this fascinating for purely selfish reasons. Once it's pointed out, it's obvious the style is 30 years too late. But I never considered that film living without that poster. Makes me wonder which of our covers (if any) will get retconned into "original poster" status?
We’re deeply saddened today by the passing of our friend Jason Polan, who was an integral part of the Criterion family for over a decade.
On The Current, our art director

I assume people are sick of hearing about the Consumer Protection Bureau but it’s genuinely such an impressive accomplishment—she built a new Federal agency FROM SCRATCH, that has already returned over $12 BILLION to defrauded people. She is very, very good at the job.
Cleaning around my desk this morning turned up some doodles from recent (and not-so-recent) meetings, so I thought I'd do a social media!
Here's an early-ish Koker Trilogy sketch...
I thought Action Journalism

Per conversation with
@rhuntstudio
and Greg Manchess last night, I found a few of my art direction doodles when cleaning off my desk today. These are just proof of concept for me, doodled during meetings; I never show these to the artist...
Look for these banners to find

My 7-year old spent two hours this morning pause-playing
@bonappetit
Baking School so she could take copious notes on the recipe, then we spent the rest of the day making this cake. It is no one's birthday, she just REALLY loves Claire from the BA Test Kitchen.
I'm helping to judge the advertising/institutional category for the

The best briefs, imho, leave possibilities open while still establishing clear parameters for what you're hoping to achieve. Otherwise you're just asking the artist to flail around in the dark trying to please a client who refuses to say what they want.

job : Creating the cover art for
@Criterion
release of Hollywood pioneer Dorothy Arzner’s film “Dance, Girl, Dance”. I highly recommend this film about ambition, friendship, female artistic struggle and self-actualisation⭐️👌 Thanks so much

(Also, not that anyone on Twitter cares, but my case for Warren over Biden, Klobuchar, Buttigeig, etc is that the only case FOR those candidates is “a return to normalcy,” and to my eye that’s a false hope at this point. The moment requires a more significant course-correction.)
If you haven't yet, please consider pre-ordering the Action Journalism paperback by
@MiklosFelvideki
and me. The more demand we get, the more likely it is we get the chance to make more, and we have so many more stories to tell in this world!
My honest assessment of the electoral realities is that Warren probably scrapes into office with 51% of the vote where Bernie might get 53%. But I am absolutely CONVINCED that Warren will accomplish more with her 51 than Bernie could with 53.
Over on IG, my devious plan to lure people in with movie-adjacent content when really all I want is for them to pre-order Action Journalism vol I continues...
And hey, while you're at it, tell your local comics shop you'd like to pre-order issues
#2
and
#3
, with the standard Miklos & Mari covers OR the variants by
@max_sarin
and
@EricaFails
, respectively. (Both of whom also contribute back-up stories!)
I think I screwed up the timing of the upload so no new Action Journalism this week, I'm sorry to say! Instead here's the entirety of issue
#3
, for free, just 'cause. By
@MiklosFelvideki
and myself.
Hey, remember comics? Well,
@MiklosFelvideki
and I made one, and the first issue is up on Comixology now:
It's called "Action Journalism" and we'll be posting an issue a week for five weeks. Self-contained, all-ages stories. Fun!
Conversely, while Warren would obviously welcome mass support (and needs some to get elected, like anyone), it’s not crucial to her governance. She understands the levers of power, she knows who to staff in what position to take full advantage of the existing legal framework.
I've only just today made the connection that Jack Kirby and my dad share a birthday.
I'm now 100% sure there were a few years I remembered Kirby's and forgot my dad's.
@ewarren
(Just thought I'd squander all that Richard Gangel award goodwill with some low-key politics posting. ;) For the record: I admire Bernie and will enthusiastically vote for any dem in the general, but I think Warren would be best at the actual job so she's got my vote.)
This piece by Oliver Munday is well written, well worth a read, and all too familiar. (The handwriting-practice false start idea in particular is one I've had rejected myself.)
(And the case against Bloomberg is that, c’mon, he’s only there for dramatic irony, right? To be the penultimate boss Warren or Bernie needs to defeat before they move on to the big boss? Nobody’s serious with that, right?)
