Today is the first time in a couple of months that I heard my native language (Polish) in-person. What made it even more enjoyable was that it happened because of talking to a British philosopher, @PhilOMelos!

A country not good enough to be defended voluntarily and relying instead on slavery is not worth defending at all.
🇵🇱 Poland considers bringing back universal conscription — the General Staff says there may soon be no alternative Brigadier General Rafał Mernik, head of military training at the Polish General Staff, has openly spoken in favor of restoring universal military service.

Very nice set of philosophical views. Of course, each of them is completely uncontestable, so we can stop with this thing called ‘philosophy’.
Every person who engages in philosophy is a tragedy. They have wasted their life, as surely as someone who is strung out on heroin, plays video games, or commits the supreme self-negation. We can only hope that they, in spite of their life choices, do something of use to society.

There is no better place to have a walk and think about philosophy than Lugano 😌

Just finished the new @witchernetflix season. Still think the series butchered the source material I grew up on and its potential. But as much as I disliked the previous seasons, this one was actually watchable. Dare I say I even had fun during many scenes.

Free will isn't magic—it's evolution. Neuroscientist @WiringTheBrain, author of Free Agents, makes the evolutionary case for how life evolved the power to choose in our Interintellect salon with philosopher @Epagogist. Watch the full conversation: https://t.co/TyDdYtTBrx

Induction is not defined in philosophy of science as just generalization from instances, but includes explanation too, as well as other forms of inference.
"There is no induction... The Earth is circling the Sun, therefore you think there's a gravitational force... You're forming a theory...you're not extrapolating anything." ~Conjecture Institute Fellow Eric Denton with Ambassador @ToKTeacher

Mathematicians who studied whether GPT-5 could create original mathematics say “The danger is not only loss of originality, but also weakening the very process of being a mathematician.” Inspired by the viral open problem in convex optimization solved a few weeks ago.

Which is to say it isn't knowledge...
"All knowledge is conjectural—not *derived* from or *based on* data, perceptions or anything. It consists of fallible attempts to solve apparent problems." @DavidDeutschOxf

Academic conferences should have entrances like combat sports. Imagine walking up to speak while The Imperial March plays and you flex your notes.

New research on the question of whether studying philosophy makes students better thinkers...
dailynous.com
A new study “offers the strongest evidence to date that studying philosophy does indeed make people better thinkers.” Readers may recall the previous research of Michael Prinzing (Baylor) & Michael...

One of the most shocking experiences since my teenage years, while talking to average Joes and Janes, was discovering how many people believe in reincarnation or destiny. The latter came up far more often, though.
if reincarnation is real, I wonder how many people stare at their own art in museums, listen to music they made in a different life, and read books they don't remember writing.
