Today I got to ride HS1. A quiet, smooth and comfortable modern high speed electric railway. 250m 12 car trains with 680 seats. Awesome. This is what we could've had from London up to Manchester, Leeds and Scotland. (With 1/3rd longer trains and 35% more capacity.)

Just a reminder that the RFA has been crippled by workforce issues due to worsening pay and conditions for its seafarers over a decade. Their total annual wage bill? £96m 0.0017% of the Defence Budget. The cost to actually fix this would be miniscule. Not doing so is a choice.

Everyone behaves as if the reasons why defence cannot recruit and retain quality people through a full career are deep and complicated. They're really not.

I give good odds that these ships are sold to someone outside of NATO and they proceed to operate them for another 20 years.

If the intent is to abandon any hope of regenerating a credible amphibious capability, we should have divested ourselves of the LSD(A)s and reactivated the tankers to double down on the CSG and NATO sustainment. There. I said it.

They didn't intend to invest in London Gateway out of the goodness of their heart, or out of some fondness for the UK. They were going to do it because they thought it would make them money. If they want to lose out because they're unwilling to obey UK regulations, their loss.

Here they are, coming to grovel for investment from companies that give not one singular shit about their workforce, or the UK. DP World sacked 800 skilled UK seafarers to hire in foreign labour on half the UK minimum wage. Yet we're supposed to bend and scrape for their money?

And, of course, we will now get a couple of days of the usual sort banging on about how the UK might not get an investment in London Gateway from DP World because we *dared* to call their subsidiary what they are: a predatory employer. Should such a company own and run UK CNI?

P&O, and DP World who own them, did that so they could pay their ferry staff £4.80-£5.50 an hour. The 2023 Seafarers Wages Act will force ships calling at UK ports over 120 times per year (i.e. ferry companies and similar) to pay the UK minimum wage. Good.

I'm not sure why anyone thinks that DP World have a place running UK CNI. They sacked the entire UK workforce of P&O, 800 mariners, and replaced them with underqualified foreign agency staff. They should not expect government to treat them with kid gloves https://t.co/3qeK9vIGqO
