My pathology report came back today, following my second surgery yesterday.
They got it all. My margins are completely clear.
A lot of radiation and maintenance still ahead, but they got it.
They got the cancer. 🥹😭
I had a guy follow me to my car when leaving the ballpark tonight.
In the midst of me trying to discourage him from anything, a man stepped over, asked him to let me be on my way and that was that.
To all the gentleman out there, it’s appreciated more than you may realize.
Leaving the complex today, I was in the midst of a group of players heading the same direction.
A player leaned over & whispered, “Are you the one who wrote that pay article?”
I nodded.
He gestured to the guys around him.
“Can’t tell you how much that meant to us. Thank you.”
In 2019, minor league players will make on average (Pretax amount) between $6,100 (Single A) and $14,850 (Triple-A) for the season.
The federally recognized poverty line for a single-person household in 2019?
$14,380.
Chew on that.
Hello, I’m Emily.
I watch sports, eat obscene amounts of pizza and chicken wings, I like sports bars, war movies, I like to think I know a thing or two about baseball and yes, I’m a woman.
Love me or view me as a threat to society. I’m good either way.
Happy 2019.
Want a reason to smile?
I had a cancer scare, got my test results back today and I’m clean. I’ll find ways to spread positivity in 2020 if it’s the last thing I do.
HE DID IT. NO-HITTER.
First minor league career complete-game and NO-HITTER for
#Tigers
Casey Mize and the first overall for Mize since his no-no for
@AuburnBaseball
on May 9.

One word to describe his AA debut — 🔥 sensational 🔥:

One year ago, I had just completed seven hours of chemotherapy.
I went home, caught an hour nap and drove to my eighth consecutive West Michigan Home Opener.
One year later, I’m back and I’m cancer-free. This is something special.
Year no. 9 begins now.
Quick life update for those asking:
They found more cancer and we’ve started discussions about more surgery. I’m hopeful as ever that I’m going to beat this, but just have to conquer a few extra steps.
I’ll be back to the backfields before you know it. Big love, y’all 🤙🏼
Got my head officially cleaned up today and have to admit, I could get used to the hot towel treatment.
Letting go of the last of my hair is such a liberating thing. Fresh start to a chapter I’m winning day by day and 26 days until I’m back at the ballpark.

Personal update: Today and this photo mark one year since Nugget was diagnosed with Leukemia.
A year later, she’s slowly being cut back on her treatments, her hair is growing back and this little lady is in remission. Thank you all for your prayers and support for her.
18 months.
3 surgeries.
5 weeks of radiation.
14 infusions of two different types of chemotherapy.
As of today after successful check-in with my surgeon, I’ve officially reached the follow up only appointment phase.
I’m coming back soon for you,
@MiLB

Some news: First of all, I’m NOT leaving The Athletic. Let’s just get that out of the way...
I’m beyond thrilled to announce I’ve accepted the position of

minor league correspondent for

.
So grateful for another opportunity to grow and advance my career.
The Mets completed a $57 million Spring Training renovation.
It would cost roughly $4.3 million per organization to give a farm system a raise.
But, hey -- priorities.
Don't want the minor league players to lose sight of the PB&J they'll be eating from April to September.
Hi.
Women like sports, women know sports, women are passionate about sports and women want to work in sports.
To assume we are an endangered species is a lazy, uneducated take.
Dear Minor League Baseball players,
As I prepare for another year of covering your adventures, may your bus neck pillows stay fluffed, may the peanut butter spread smoothly, may your Venmo stay full & may your air mattresses remain inflated.
Thanks for letting me ride along.
Four years ago...
I decided to take a chance on writing about a group of young men who no one really seemed to acknowledge.
It started as attending Class A games, taking the bits of instruction my Dad had given me during coaching days and deciding to learn.
Personal note, was just told my cousin has been diagnosed with COVID-19. She has a history of lung issues. Any thoughts and prayers would be treasured tonight.
My birthday is Wednesday.
A year ago, I was two rounds in with chemotherapy, was starting to lose my hair, four months away from two surgeries and seven months away from five weeks of radiation.
A year later, I am four infusions away from being DONE.
SO MUCH TO CELEBRATE. 💕
Nine months ago today, I was diagnosed with cancer.
Nine months of prayers, tears, support, faith and stubbornness.
Winning.
#BreastCancerAwarenessMonth
It’s official. I’ll begin radiation in the next few weeks.
It feels like the final hurdle in this hellish competition. There is a lot of uncertainty as to how I’ll respond to it, but after everything I’ve conquered this year, it’s just one more battle to win.
#StandUpToCancer
Nothing says you don't care for proper marketing for the future of baseball than telling your minor league players they aren't worth $400 a week for the next three months.
Quick nugget to share for 2019. It’s a little mind-blowing, so you may want to sit down...
Are you sitting?
Ok, good. Here it is...
Women watch sports because...wait for it...they actually LIKE sports.
2024 will mark the first time in two years that I won’t begin the year fighting cancer.
Grateful doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface.
#StandUpToCancer
Back into the OR tomorrow morning for surgery no. two.
Send up all the good vibes and prayers.
Another hill I fully plan on conquering.
Love y’all 🫶🏼
#StandUpToCancer
I just want to sit in a ballpark, behind home plate on a sunny day with a beer in my hand and a break from real life.
One day closer to closing this frickin’ door and putting cancer behind me. 🙏🏼
After a year and a half, three ER visits, 25 straight weekdays of radiation, two surgeries, two types of chemo and 13 infusions…
I only have to do this ONE MORE time.
Thank you all for fighting by my side. Words will never do my gratitude justice.
#StandUpToCancer
Four years ago, my six-year-old niece was battling leukemia.
Four years later, she’s leukemia-free and riding in the car with me today, “How many more treatments do you have, Emily?”
Me, “Two more, babe.”
Niece, “I beat it and you’re gonna too.”
#StandUpToCancer
Effective May 8, Nugget is done.
No more chemo. She won. Two years later, she beat Leukemia.
The
@daytonatortugas
were one of the first groups to reach out requesting to send some encouragement to her when this began.
Fitting that she chose to wear this shirt tonight.

It takes A LOT for me to block people on Twitter.
I've now blocked two in the same day.
Putting it simply, chauvinism, racism and "just trying to help a girl understand baseball" aren't welcome.
Just be nice, guys. It isn't as hard as you make it out to be.
Hey friends, just a note to let you know I’ll be a bit quieter this week as I prep for surgery on Friday.
I’ll report in once I’m in the clear, but until then, your prayers would be extremely appreciated.
Can’t wait to be back at the backfields soon.
#StandUpToCancer
@DickieV
I got out of bed by myself for the first time today. My nurse credits my stubbornness and I can’t argue her point.
I keep hearing
@GlennonDoyle
saying, “We can do hard things.”
Cancer, I can’t wait to tell you that you’ve officially lost this battle.
#StandUpToCancer
Guy, “What do you do?”
Me, “I’m a baseball writer.”
Guy, “So, you like sports, huh?”
Me, “Hate them.”
Guy: *Blank stare*
Me, “That was a joke.”
Guy: *Nervous laughter
...and this is why my Mom doesn’t like her odds of getting more grand babies.
