Today
@SenatorCCleare
and I are introducing legislation to create the Social Housing Development Authority (SHDA), a public and democratically-run developer able to build, acquire, and renovate permanently affordable housing with 100% union labor.
🧵Every month or so, I get a call from someone wanting to know what I’m going to do about crime. Often what is being talked about is homelessness. Homelessness is a crime committed by our society, not by people who do not have a house.
I just returned from Rikers Island where a group of elected officials exercised our legal right to inspect correctional facilities. What I witnessed was a humanitarian crisis. A horror house of abuse and neglect. I'll share more soon but for now my message is simple: decarcerate.
A reporter from Paris just interviewed me, and asked, “in a Rikers, did you feel ashamed?” I found myself suddenly on the verge of tears. Finally I had clarity on how I feel. I am ashamed. We are collectively detached from the suffering of our most vulnerable, intentionally.
🧵 I want to share more about what I witnessed at Rikers Island yesterday. We broke into groups to inspect different parts of the sprawling facility. I spent several hours at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center.
I just returned from Rikers Island where a group of elected officials exercised our legal right to inspect correctional facilities. What I witnessed was a humanitarian crisis. A horror house of abuse and neglect. I'll share more soon but for now my message is simple: decarcerate.
I am devastated to share that my dear friend Ryan Carson, who worked for NYPIRG and created the advocacy organization “No OD NY”, was murdered last night. I met Ryan many years ago through the DIY punk scene and he has been a trusted friend in Albany and at home. I miss him.
As Mayor, Bloomberg cut funding for HIV prevention at a time when new infections were increasing among young men of color.
He also hosted the 2004 RNC when Bush was running for re-election on a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.
Oil and fracked gas lobbyists are taking advantage of the Ukraine crisis, sending memos to legislators demanding more domestic fossil fuel production. This is dead wrong.
We're witnessing a war driven by the politics of fossil fuels. We need renewable energy, everywhere, now.
It is clear to me that the core of our fundamental problems are: poor treatment and pay of workers, bad & unaffordable housing, bad & unaffordable healthcare. But the biggest problem is that we don’t work collectively— our societal priority is to keep the wealthy comfortable.
Here's what we can do:
1. Pressure DAs to stop asking for cash bail and consigning people who haven't been convicted to this horror house
2.
@NYCMayor
must use his power to release people rapidly
3.
@GovKathyHochul
should immediately sign the Less is More legislation
All this to say, throwing people in jail when they need housing, resources or healthcare is not our answer. But the answer will take time. Impatience and intolerance of momentary discomfort are the enemies of progress.
Touring Karl Marx Hof, an enormous public housing complex where you can live if you apply and make less than 3K a month. The lease is -permanent- no matter if your income, and you can switch units. Kindergarten, library, bike storage, parking and gardens included.
#WhenInWien
as a legislator, my job is to bring resources to the community and work to understand & fix our problems. How do we fix our systems to prevent suffering for all? These fixes will never be instant. Our problems are so tangled together they become hard to see.
I am not a cop. My job is to create long term solutions through legislation, community support, and thoughtful engagement with our problems. If we all agree that our system is broken, it will take patience and time to fix. It will require new attitudes. It requires empathy.
To be clear this feeling isn’t limited to Rikers. It’s also how we treat the homeless, those with physical or psychological differences or needs, those who are recovering from trauma, substance abuse and more. Our culture is so often pro-isolation, and it exacerbates pain.
It is illegal for the police to interrogate you about your political beliefs.
If you're asked any question about your views on Black Lives Matter or antifa or anything else, do not answer.
And write down everything they asked when you get out.
I can't believe I am writing this but it's official: we won.
This was a collective and truly grassroots campaign, powered by a deep love for North Brooklyn and a desire to make it better.
Thank you so much for believing in me, against all the odds.
A year ago, New York was staring down a $15 billion budget deficit with a (thankfully former) Governor and his buddies saying we'd destroy the state if we raised taxes on the wealthy.
We did anyway. The rich haven't fled. And combined with federal aid, we now have a surplus.
On "Election Day" in June, I was down 10 points. A whole month later, when they finally counted the absentees, I won. In the interim, people kept telling me they were sorry I lost. It was very emotionally confusing.
Anyway,
#CountTheVotes
and then let's fix this broken system!
OBCC is where people are taken to be processed and wait for a hearing. People are supposed to be in and out within 24 hours.
I met people who had been there for 3 months. No contact with family. Overcrowded. No air conditioning.
Most of the people I met were not at Rikers for serious allegations. One got into a fist fight at a barbecue. Many had accidentally made a small technical violation of their parole.
@PaperboyPrince
1. You are from Maryland & a gentrifier
2. You seemingly know nothing about policy, infrastructure, or how the government works
3. You know nothing about me, my history, or what my financial situation is. Before being elected I worked 3 jobs.
4. Learn some history about cycling
Reports from tenants of raw sewage flooding a building in our district. This issue is known to the owners and management—it happened before just a few months ago. Who's the owner? Hard to say, since it's an anonymous LLC. We are working with the tenants to get accountability.
New York State's housing agency currently has a four-year backlog for investigating illegal rent overcharges at stabilized apartments.
That's the tweet.
There's garbage everywhere, rotting food with maggots, cockroaches, worms in the showers, human feces and piss. Most of the toilets are broken so men are given plastic bags to relieve themselves in.
Mayor Adams and his advisers confirm the executive budget doesn't reverse any of the $58.3 million in library cuts.
Library leaders say this will result in elimination of universal six-day library service in NYC and other program cuts.
Men were calling out phone numbers to me, saying things like, “Please call my grandma and tell her where I am!” Or would burst into tears and say “I’ve been praying you would come! Save us! We are going to die!”
🧵Sending support and love to my friends in Astoria
@tiffany_caban
&
@ZohranKMamdani
. Because they proposed community based solutions to public safety, their offices have gotten so many death threats and violent messages that they have had to shut down their phone lines.
I was told by many people being held there that they're given a single meal a day, and even that has to be demanded and begged for. Everyone was thirsty and had limited access to water.
There's a lot of serious mental illness and many hadn't been given their prescription medication for months.
I met multiple men with broken hands and legs that were not being treated.
The prisoners (who have not actually been convicted of any crime, mind you) get maced regularly. For talking too much. For congregating. For anything really.
The vast majority of NYC students walk or use mass transit to get to school. They deserve a safe, functional MTA—which requires the capital investments that congestion pricing will provide.
Disappointing + short-sighted for UFT's leadership to do this at the last minute.
Today, our union, along with teachers who work at schools in Manhattan and the Bronx as well as Staten Island Borough President
@SIBPVito
, filed a federal lawsuit asking the court to halt the implementation of congestion pricing in Manhattan.
@brigidbergin
@NYCMayor
The Tenement House Act of 1879 is why we require windows… it helps to prevent infectious diseases from spreading, and helps lessen the impact of interior pollutants like stoves. Wonder if those issues are relevant today! 🤔
While one man was begging me to hug him through bars and weeping, around the corner another man yelled to my colleague, "Miss, look at me” and turned to see a man jump into a noose he made out of a sheet.
The ratio of guards to incarcerated people is something like 7 to 3. The officers hate the conditions too and are doing sick outs or just don't show up at all. The people who do report to work end up having to work 18-24 hour shifts.
It is wholly revealing how violent, and how focused on punishment and retribution, the status quo of society is. To even suggest people use a variety of strategies to solve community conflict is met with vitriol and violence. Our culture knows nothing more than an eye for an eye
Hey
@dunkindonuts
. Your delivery truck not only exceeds the legal length limit on NYC streets, it's also totally obstructing a busy crosswalk at Manhattan & Bedford Ave in Greenpoint.
Surely there's a better way to refill the pumpkin spice reserves in dense urban areas...
🧵I’m thrilled to share that last night
@NYSA_Majority
passed the LLC Transparency Act. Once
@GovKathyHochul
signs this legislation, it will create the first public beneficial ownership database in the US— something already common in the EU.
With a broken heart I share this news, knowing that all in the environmental advocacy world are already grieving. Ryan was also an accomplished poet, a deep, sensitive thinker and a whole lot of fun. I love you.
In Vienna “non profit” housing, all profits have to be reinvested in building non profit housing, not in wealth or shareholder profit. Social housing Tenants are not allowed to pay more than 1/3 income in rent. Even in “for profit” housing, there is permanent rent control.
I’m driving on the thruway back to NYC. I just heard a rest stop employee on the phone with her daughter explaining that she can’t leave work, even tho all of her children have COVID. She’s sending them a pizza. Her job is to make sandwiches here. Is THIS the society we want?
Quite surprised when a
@FDNY
fire truck from engine 146 just used their loudspeaker to boo me as they drove by because their colleague is running against me. Doesn’t seem legal? Nor professional.
Because of the lack of security, everyone's scared their going to be injured or killed. Most people have fashioned some kind of homemade weapon to defend themselves.
@cdohertyk
@jpridgely
Exclusionary, single-family zoning is a legacy of Jim Crow, and suburban zoning reform is necessary for racial justice and the environmental sustainability. I support the Governor’s efforts to promote denser housing construction in the suburbs along transit routes.
Ryan was the kindest, funniest, and hardest working man in advocacy. He and I bonded because our friends died in the opioid epidemic, & we struggled to make good out of our grief. He put his whole heart into making the world a safer place for all people.
This budget! 😭. This could have been very easy. We had a surplus, a super majority, and generally agreed on the executive budget. Instead we are a week late, & the Gov seems set on ignoring or actively harming our most vulnerable while we are still in a pandemic. It’s not ok.
I cannot sit idly by while my government supports the collective punishment of civilians. As Gaza plunged into darkness last night, I joined
@jvpliveNY

Last night a 76-year-old was struck by a speeding driver on Ocean Pkwy, severing both his legs. He bled out on the street.
I don't know if lowering the speed limit would've prevented his death. But I do know NYC needs the ability to try. Sammy's Law now.
Today I officially begin as the new Assembly Member for the 50th district. I’m humbled by the faith you’ve put in me and the enormity of the challenges that lie ahead. I’m ready to fight for a New York where everyone can live with dignity. Happy New Year!
Millionaire migration is a myth.
After we increased personal income tax rates on millionaires, New York’s millionaire population grew by 21.1%.

The G is shutting down this summer for signal upgrades—a welcome investment.
But a line serving the fastest growing neighborhoods in the city should have a full 8-cars and restored service to Forest Hills.
Tell
@GovKathyHochul
we need a full upgrade:
This is a
@ZephyrTeachout
and
@CynthiaNixon
appreciation tweet.
We weren't endorsed by a single elected official. We were astronomically outspent. But they saw what we were building, stepped up and threw in with the underdogs.
That's what courage and vision looks like.
While you were watching the Oscars last night, I went on MSNBC to talk about Gov. Hochul’s deployment of National Guard soldiers in the subway system and what would foster genuine safety for commuters.
Here’s a short excerpt:
One reason why there's always significant flooding around McCarren Park during extreme rain events: there are buried creeks under there. And the whole thing was a salt marsh!
Honestly if someone responded to allegations with humility, respect for the victim, admission of blind spots and an restorative justice action plan to grow as a responsible person, I would appreciate that a lot. It would be a game changer.
Tonight we delivered a petition from 20,000+ NYers to
@SenSchumer
demanding he call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza now.
Chuck ran for office as an opponent of what he calls "that horrible war" in Vietnam. Now he's supporting a war killing civilians at an unprecedented rate.
So thrilled that
@NYC_DOT
has installed jersey barriers to protect the crucial bike lane on Wythe Ave where it passes beneath the BQE. It took a minute but it’s already making a difference.

BREAKING: The Delaware House is once again set to vote Tuesday on a bill that would allow hundreds of LLCs to vote in local elections in the town of Seaford, pop. 8,500.
The bill was pulled from the schedule last week after receiving national scrutiny — but now it's back.
🎉 Breaking news! 🎉
@NYCMayor
just announced a $75 million investment in Bushwick Inlet Park to demolish the CitiStorage facility, one of the final obstacles to completing the long-promised 27 acres of waterfront open space. This is huge!
If New York State were a country, we would boast the 10th highest GDP in the world.
There's absolutely no reason, other than political will, that we can't bring the MTA up to a state of good repair while expanding service in transit deserts.
The deputy chief of staff at the MTA's construction department says the agency can't "in good conscience" build the new Brooklyn-Queens rail line until the rest of its infrastructure is brought into a state of good repair.
⚡️ The budget bill has been printed. The All-Electric Building Act will be law.
This is a game changer. We beat the fossil fuel lobby to protect the health and future of New Yorkers. And we're forging ahead with putting our nation-leading climate law into practice.
My statement on reporting in the NY Post that Governor Hochul is capitulating to misinformation and propaganda by seeking to undo bail reform, discovery reform and Raise the Age.
If these reactionary misguided policies are included in the budget, I will vote no.
Yesterday, Governor Hochul released a plan (via the right-wing NYPost) to radically change our bail, discovery and age of criminal responsibility laws in a must-pass state budget less than two weeks before the deadline.
It's reckless, wrong and not how we should govern.
Cuomo mismanaged and disinvested from the MTA for years. When he did meddle in mass transit, he drove away competent leadership. The one decent thing he did was get out of the way of congestion pricing. Now he’s carping from the sidelines, desperate to be relevant. He’s not.
Many things have changed since 2019 when we passed congestion pricing and while it is the right public policy, we must seriously consider if now is the right time to enact it.

authorize Overdose Prevention Centers statewide. She’s now in custody at the NYPD’s 7th Precinct.
It's true! I'm joining forces with
@nycDSA

The crises we face are huge but DSA is building a movement to meet them.
Today Greenpointers showed up at City Hall to deliver 7,250 petition signatures (66% from Community Board 1) to

demanding that he delivers on his promise to make McGuinness safe.
Listen to the people, Mr. Mayor, not your donors. Get stuff done.
It was a joyous morning at Marsha P. Johnson State Park for the unveiling of the GORGEOUS new entrance gateway!
At a time when trans people are under attack, I'm so proud our district is home to this vibrant tribute to a revolutionary figure in NYC and US history. 🌸🌼💐🪷🪻
In Williamsburg tonight, we rallied to protect longtime tenants facing eviction. The landlord wants to clear out all the rent stabilized units and turn the building into a single private residence, a clear violation of the Housing Stability & Tenant Protection Act.
Last year, I introduced legislation to authorize New York City to dramatically increase funding available for stormwater management and green infrastructure while making water bills more fair. 🧵
My office gets multiple calls a day from constituents distressed and confused why the New York Health Act, which has majority co-sponsorship in both chambers, isn't coming to the floor for a vote.
I'm honestly not sure what to tell them.
Excited that the city is actively exploring trash containerization but with so many world-class universities and research centers in NYC, do we really need to give public funds to McKinsey?!
For 20 weeks, McKinsey will study other cities that use trash containers — like Paris and Amsterdam — and identify what types of bins would work best for New York City.
I respectfully ask for space while I grieve my dear friend. I am traumatized by this loss and I am taking time and space. Beyond my district and caring for my constituents needs I am not participating in anything right now. Thank you.
Gathering at 917 Manhattan Ave where tenants, including families that have lived in Greenpoint for 45 years, are facing displacement. We’re calling on the landlord to drop the evictions and provide new leases with fair rents now!
It is a national humiliation that our nonsense-based, outdated drug policy is going to cost us our most exciting Olympic moment, and is hurting one of our brightest and best talents.
#standwithshacarri
I got elected by my neighbors. And I am here to represent my neighbors. Neighbors are ppl who live here. This hood is 82% renter. I’m not moved by money. I own nothing, and I was elected to be the representative. That’s why I’m different, And that’s why people are scared of me.
Assemblymembers do not get to confirm judges, but I urge my colleagues in the Senate to vote no on the anti-choice, anti-worker conservative Judge LaSalle for the highest court of our state. The repercussions would be damaging and long lasting, as we have learned.
#NoOnLaSalle
I’m so heartbroken. These individuals are my constituents. Behind the scenes, mutual aid workers,
@VOCALNewYork
, my office, 94 precinct and others were doing harm reduction here. Working with residents to decide how to proceed & stabilize. Instead, instant destruction.
Police and sanitation clearing an encampment under BQE in Williamsburg, CO of the 9th Kathleen Fahey tells me it’s part of mayors new initiative, announced over the weekend.
Will the Governor or Mayor apologize for fanning the flames of right-wing backlash based on a misleading NYPD account? Will the national media cover this new reporting as rabidly? I wish these weren't rhetorical questions.
🚨🚨🚨New Videos Contradict NYPD Account of Lead-Up to Times Square Attack on Cops
The surveillance footage shows Brito walking down the sidewalk away from the police officers, pushing a baby carriage that appears to be holding his possessions.
Ham-fisted and authoritarian response to several terrible incidents (even as the crime rate is falling ) that does nothing to foster real public safety but validates GOP propaganda about urban lawlessness in an election year.
In other words, a predictable move by this Governor.
New: Gov. Hochul announces that she is deploying 750 National Guard members into the NYC subways to conduct bag checks, in addition to another 250 law enforcement members. She is also proposing a bill to ban people convicted of a violent crime on the subway from public transit
Today I am going to witness two of my volunteers get married! They met door knocking for me! Campaigns and politics are truly about love, shared values & devotion 😍
