Could there be a better metaphor for our time? "ConocoPhillips plans to install 'chillers' into the permafrost — which is fast melting because of climate change — to keep it solid enough to support the equipment to drill for oil."
I’m thrilled to announce my upcoming book "H Is for Hope," an exploration of climate change and the uncertainties of our future in 26 alphabetical essays--beautifully, hauntingly illustrated by Wesley Allsbrook. Available 3/26 and for preorder now!
This story just keeps getting worse: “Previously unreported documents show what Exxon said publicly about climate change was very different from how it approached the issue after 2006.”
Reading a recent paper from
@nature
, I came across this extraordinary statistic: "The global mass of produced plastic is greater than the overall mass of all terrestrial and marine animals combined."
This, it seems to me, is where
#COVID19
offers the perfect analogy with climate change: the moment it's obvious enough for people to take effective action is the moment it's too late to take effective action. What climate scientists have been warning for decades:
Regarding Social Distancing:
“I want the public to keep wondering if we should be doing this. Because the moment we’re no longer wondering whether we should be doing it, it’s too late... That means that we know we should be, and that’s a bad place to be”
“When I talk to people about the scale of the climate emergency and what’s at stake…I always feel guilty, among other feelings, because it’s like being the bearer of such horrible news.”
Trump has now made three videos on his own illness, one each the last three days. He has never once mentioned any of the 209,000 Americans who have died of the same illness on his watch.
This is what a country that was (even vaguely) serious about climate change would do. It points to one of the many things not talked about in the U.S.: the urgent need for better public transportation: Denmark is proposing a ‘green tax’ on all flights.
"As cars get larger, everyone feels pressed to buy a larger car." Good piece on the proliferation of "light trucks," which is terrible for the planet and for pedestrians:
Thrilled to announce that the 10th anniversary edition of "The Sixth Extinction" is now out, with a new epilogue on insects. You can listen to an excerpt here:
Another day, another modern-day record: global sea surface temperatures are now up to 21.19°C.
By comparison, the 2023 record was 21.09°C, held from August 22-26.
Of all the positive feedbacks in the climate system, this one may be the most dangerous: We're screwed, so why bother? From the great

Not sure if this is inspiring or depressing. A world leader changes his mind after being informed of the basics of climate science -- information that has been widely available for at least 20 years.
Tom Lovejoy once told me that he got up every morning and thought, How can I do the most good today? He was one of the most extraordinary people I have ever met and will be very sorely missed.
Tom Lovejoy, probably the greatest conservation biologist of his generation and a wonderful friend, has died. With love and sorrow, I send my sympathies to all his family, friends, colleagues and fans.
The National Butterfly Center is a nonprofit dedicated to the conservation and study of wild butterflies.
This weekend, they’re closed after a scrape with a GOP candidate led to “credible threats” against their staff.

Twitter under Elon Musk's ownership has played a major role in allowing Russian propaganda about Ukraine to reach more people than before the war began, according to a year-long study released this week by the European Commission.
“The melting of the Antarctic Ice Sheet may have already passed a point of no return, a new study has found, and scientists say it could contribute to sea level rise over coming centuries and possibly millennia.”
"One impression that emerges from Cuomo’s ten years in office is of an immense amount of time wasted." Great piece from
@rtraister
. I covered his dad for many years, and confusing bullying for action seems to be a family flaw:
There has been much discussion lately (including by me) of the parallels between
#ClimateChange
and
#COVID19
. Perhaps the most salient is that we can't even get our act together to do the bare minimum:
While we were still in the White House, I began sharing my summer favorites—and now, it’s become a little tradition that I look forward to sharing with you all. So here's this year's offering. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
A country that can't figure out how to keep assault rifles out of the hands of 18-year-olds doesn't seems likely to solve actually complicated policy problems:
Thrilled to share this video of my forthcoming book, "H is for Hope." This is my first illustrated book project, and Wesley Allsbrook’s illustrations are just amazing! The book comes out at the end of next month.
"We are in this very deep — there are only wrong answers, only hard choices at this point,"

of tackling the climate crisis. Listen to their discussion on the latest episode of "The Ezra Klein Show."
As at
@CFigueres
put it: “If you don’t understand the threat of
#climatechange
to developing countries, you cannot lead the world’s top international development institution.”
I joined Twitter reluctantly, but over the years have learned so much from the scientists/journalists/activists/concerned citizens/jokesters assiduously posting to it. If you're heading to Mastodon, I'm

President Trump, who is still infected with COVID-19, removed his mask while looking at media from a White House balcony after his return from the hospital
Cumulative CO2 emissions since 1850 have used up 86% of the carbon budget for an even chance of 1.5C (or 89% of the budget for a two-thirds chance).
