📖 I recommend “The Sirens’ 🚨 Call” by @chrislhayes…a deep dive into the issue of our dwindling attention span. Having time away from work has finally given me the mental space to think about what we’re all focused on & why…and it’s a topic as relevant as any in our lives.

That being said, journalists, politicians and others need to find new, creative ways to make this kind of content entertaining and engaging as well…knowing the system we’re all now living with.

Why does local TV news blow out all programming to cover car chases? Because they often get 2x the ratings of everything else. If viewers flocked to deep dives on solving public policy issues like that, you’d see a whole lot more of that on TV.

Just like our media…especially our social media system…doesn’t reward nuance or centrism. Until voters & viewers start demanding different behavior by rewarding it with their votes and views…this sort of thing is only likely to intensify.

Because of the system we’re in…this behavior is actually rewarded through more clicks, cable news hits, fundraising dollars, and higher poll numbers. In a Machiavellian sense, it’s a smart political strategy…that’s clearly working for Pres. Trump, Gov. Newsom and others. So

Instead of “owning the libs” or “trolling Trump” to increase social media clout & fundraising dollars…what if that same energy was put into bipartisan solutions to improve the lives of hardworking taxpayers? Our entire political and media incentive structure is so messed up.

Wouldn’t it be refreshing if politicians & their staffs took the time they spend on memes mocking their opponents to instead solve public policy problems? If only memes helped to make housing more affordable, improved our kids’ schools or made our streets cleaner and safer.
