At work today I had to explain to some colleagues that I didn’t write anything in English until I went to university. It is very much my second language I was not taught English grammar and work hard every day in my writing. This level of ignorance is exhausting.
Crèche staff are some of the most underpaid and undervalued workers in the country. Our focus should be on the state that has enabled a for profit system of childcare enabling the market to make massive profit

Tomorrow in one of the wealthiest countries in the world the Irish government is going to allow hundreds of people not to get out of their beds, not be washed, not be dressed or fed as section 39 workers are going on strike. Shameful.

ëlbrowne documentary was excellent but also very depressing. His book should be a core reading for all health and social care students. Much of the issues are still so relevant around power and control.
The sneering about the Healy Rae’s says a lot of peoples lack of understanding of rural Ireland. A family that get things done based on social connections. You may not like their politics but you have to admire how they are adored in Kerry

A year into a pandemic in Ireland 769 new cases and you still need a referral from a gp to get a test, a limited hotel quarantine system that looks like will be run by private security and a public health system doing contact tracing via excel

Not a mention in the papers to the fact that a minister for the Gaeltacht and specifically the Irish language appointed this wk has never expressed any policy input or that he can speak Irish . An utter disaster for the language and Gaeltacht communities. Do we not mattter?

I just completed an exit interview so it’s a good time to give thanks to all my UCD colleagues. It has been a joy. Thanks in particular to my

friends for being the best colleagues. Some logistics to sort before I commence a new role which I am very excited for.
Dr Ronan Glynn has done outstanding work over the last few months -we owe him so much. His communication has been outstanding. He also looks exhausted I hope he gets to take some time out.

Shameful scenes in

can only imagine how traumatised it was for children. Are the people of Roscrea saying they don’t want anyone to move there?
5,000 community and voluntary health workers are on indefinite strike across 18 community and voluntary sector agencies. The lack of media coverage is astounding after a blowout budget.
Furious about this headline. We have not sorted contract tracing or testing, we have been lax about meat factories, direct provision and enforcement of pubs. Older people have not caused the rise in cases this plan will not solve anything but will cause significant distress.
I hope everyone watches this show tomorrow on how we are killing the language in Gaeltacht areas. No one can get planning and Irish speakers can’t afford houses. In one village Baile na nGall out of 80 houses only 11 are occupied all the year 🤷🏼♀️

read her experience here. Our university did not support her- I’m afraid that many other may have experienced this but cannot speak up as they are on precarious contract. Real action needed now.

I know many nurses who are struggling today as they head to the picket line. It is the last thing they want to do. However our health system is not supporting our nurses and they need to listened to and supported.

Just walked past a large group of people protesting against women accessing health services right outside a gp practice. We urgently need exclusion zone legislation that is enforced when can we expect it
@SimonHarrisTD
How many gps can you lift the phone to and call over the wkend🤔 A year into a pandemic and in Ireland you still need a gp referral to get a test this is utterly ridiculous. Test centres should be everywhere and anyone should be able to walk up and get a test for free.
Grim watching

-I can’t help compare with now and how so many professionals from all sectors have spoken up on the impact of homeless and direct provision on children and yet the state turns a blind eye.

You have to wonder what elected members have been doing for the people of Roscrea, where a hotel in the town centre has been unused for 10 years. A broader reflection is needed: no doctors, no dentists, lack of services and derelict buildings but plenty of noise from certain TDs
The Irish state funds these workers and their organisations under Section 39 of the Health Act 2004. They are not public sector workers but do the exact same work as someone hired by the HSE directly.
Their pay used to be aligned for the exact same work, but in the crash, pay cuts were imposed on section 39s and HSE staff.....This was then restored back for HSE staff ut not for section 39 workers...yet they do the same work.
When your focus in on trolley numbers you lose any sense of humanity: Hospital tried to remove elderly patient with dementia from his bed at 4am in ‘sickening’ scenes
Norma Foley getting a full gig in education is a very good move -she is a teacher and getting the gig will perhaps highlight to Kerry people that the Healy Rae’s won’t be getting anything/are not up to much.

Interesting what’s not said in this and notes the concern of many including myself focus is on a pivot to nursing home support goes against the right to care in their homes & access to rehab- who benefits? Input of social workers critical in this-seems to be missing perspective.
Such relief for Julia. But perhaps we should be asking direct questions how this woman was inappropriately placed in a nursing home for 12 years? Surely the Irish state has a case to answer to her and the 1, 299 other people under 65 who are still in nursing homes.
A nursing home resident has been given the keys to her new home after a 12-year campaign. Julia Thurman, who acquired a disability in adulthood, was one of 1,300 people under 65 forced to live in nursing homes due to a lack of funding for specially-adapted homes
Kind and inclusive words spoken clearly. Thanks to the people of Lanesborough for speaking up.

Starting my fifth day of mandatory hotel quarantine and starting to slowly feel more human-the jet lag has been violent not helped by not being able to leave my room or open a window 😆The quarantine process though is very impressive and very well organised.
The untold story of this pandemic in Ireland is how for the past year the Irish government has richly resourced the private sector whilst starving the public health depleted workforce. Never was there a better time to invest.

This thread is a worrying summary of the state of higher education in Ireland. I am hopeful by the fact that people are now speaking up. The solutions are there eg solidarity and action from our senior colleagues and our funders need to rethink their schemes.
