I study how pesticides impact bees. Special interest in RoundUp, ‘inert ingredients’ and pesticide statistics.

New Paper! Here I argue that the list of ingredients on the back of a pesticide should no longer be a secret. Secrecy isn't in farmer's or consumer's interests! I also take on the industry arguments defending the practice. 1/6 https://t.co/4zK48mi9VD

Check out this new pesticide and bee science primer! Designed to be an accessible guide to lingo and concepts in the field. Nice job @EdStrawBio and @DaraStanley!
ATTENTION ECOTOX PEOPLE: We wrote a primer on bee and pesticide science! Specifically written to be an accessible short guide for post / undergrads. It explains all the basic lingo and concepts in simple language. @DaraStanley

Know about bees but want to learn about pesticides (or know someone who does)? Check out our introduction to bee and pesticide research just published in @JAppliedEcology! Led by @EdStrawBio during @ProtectsProject @ucdagfood @UCDEarth

New blog from me!! A step-by-step guide* on getting your science paper glued to the front of a pesticide company's door in a protest! (*ok not quite, but an interesting dissection of what SciComm on social media actually looks like). https://t.co/XPuLh8WcfK

As part of Journal of Applied Ecology’s efforts to discuss how real-world impact can be achieved following research, we’re talking to authors about their studies. In this post, Edward S…

If you could stick a bunch of sensors into a bee colony placed out in farmlands, what would you want to measure? I've got temperature, humidity, colony weight and bee entry/exit down, but I imagine there are other metrics that'd be super interesting. Thoughts?

Banning pesticides in towns just makes sense. We can control weeds without them, and it’d make our civic spaces safer. Proud to support this initiative. https://t.co/KSxziwhtGD

Fantastic project at UCD, great funding body, great project! Come join Darren in a project that'll build on some super exciting work we've been doing lately on bumblebee's response to pesticides.
Interested in #pollinators and #microbiota? We're looking for a PhD grad in microbiology and/or bioinformatics interested in applying for IRC Postdoc funding! Based in @UCDSBES and working with @NJBBrereton @julia_c_jones and @EdStrawBio

There's simply no reason we need this many products on sale. Fewer formulations (without limiting the number of active ingredients), would make it easier to make sure pesticides are safe, and wouldn't impact food production at all.

And almost 500 products on sale to totally untrained gardeners!?! There could be just 10, rigorously tested, products on sale to gardeners and there would be no complaints from the general public.

Some formulations have as many as 4 different active ingredients, whilst 1 in 5 has at least 2.

NEW PAPER: We report, for the first time, the scale of how many different pesticides are on sale in the UK and Ireland. Nearly 2,500 different pesticides are on sale in the UK, from 266 different active ingredients. With @DaraStanley

The authors were limited in surveying which pesticides/adjuvants had PFAS because of trade secrets laws. Scientists need to be able to independently verify the safety of pesticides else we end up with bioaccumulation of nasty undisclosed ingredients!

Good commentary on PFAS usage in pesticides, and their environmental effects. Co-formulants being kept secret doesn't mean they're all nice friendly substances, it means we don't if some of them are toxic forever chemicals. https://t.co/Y0ptEkOlmT

Farmers have to use IPM and do all sorts to minimise pesticide usage. While county councils just reach for the bottle because it's the most convenient option. Yet another example of double standards for pesticides and farmers.
Pesticides should only be used where no alternative exists, we can control weeds in cities without pesticides. Using pesticides on roadways and pavements leads to run-off and water contamination. Sign this sensible petition to ban urban pesticide use. https://t.co/iP15whw940
