It is the market and the logic of capitalism that dominates, largely independent of a firms internal ownership structure. It still represents a form of private ownership to produce commodities fundamentally.

A cooperative on the market competes on the same terms as every other firm. A worker owned firm lobbying the Brazilian government to displace or poison communities in the Amazon to maximize profit is not different from a hierarchical firm doing the same.

@cafreiman You arenโt comparing democratic socialism with capitalism, youโre using communism as your baseline. The largest democratic socialist states in the world donโt have worker owned farms - they have cooperatives. Do some basic research before you posit political positions please.

I want a Democratic Party that has room for everyone from Joe Manchin to AOC. Thatโs a Democratic Party built to win. This only works if one side stops thinking itโs cornered the market on good ideas and knowing how to win. I want to win. Everything else is a distraction.

From the CNT being co-opted into the Spanish state to NGOs deradicalizing the Zapatistas, delegation breeds hierarchy. Iโm in a 150+ person org thatโs thrived for 40+ years no leaders, no reps.

Of course, his history was fairly Eurocentric, so it is important to not rely on him for a wide view of things. But, his analysis was incredibly sound in my opinion.

Which isn't surprising, since, for whatever his flaws, a lack of reference to history was not among them. I think his respect for history explains a lot about how his politics developed.

the funny thing is, the more I read radical histories not written by social ecologists, the more I appreciate Bookchin. "Hammer and Hoe" was a particularly powerful example of this for me.

??? The panthers were many things, but ideologically homogeneous and docrtinaire they were not. And literally, that played a role in their decline, with the splits between Cleaver and Huey, Huey's paranoia, changing conditions, etc being something they were unable to cope with.
Over and over, the biggest formations of American socialists โSLP, SP, CP, SDS, BPsโ self-sabotaged themselves by prioritizing doctrine over pragmatic radicalism & by failing to flexibly adopt Marxism to America's concrete conditions. Can't afford to make the same mistake today.
