The world lost a conservation giant today. Elephants lost a lifelong defender. Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton's work fundamentally shaped modern conservation. Our hearts go out to his family and to our long-standing friends at @ste_kenya, who carry forward the work he began.

What stood out most was the collaboration. Five countries facing similar pressures—Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, and Panama—left Mexico with stronger connections and shared strategies for protecting the Eastern Tropical Pacific.

We were honored to join the gathering. We contributed throughout the sessions and learned directly from the community leaders who protect these waters every day. Their work drives the progress.

The conversations led by @WildAidLatino and @WildAid centered on practical, community-driven solutions. From documenting patrols to responding to illegal fishing, teams compared real experiences and built a clearer picture of what’s happening across the region.

Lewa’s 30 years of pioneering conservation have safeguarded 62,000 acres of habitat, supported 280+ rhinos, and empowered 60,000 people through education, health, and livelihoods programs.

Ten years ago, Lewa hosted the very first EarthRanger workshop. Since then, the platform has grown to 800+ sites across 70 countries.

Workshops cover training on EarthRanger and new platforms like Ecoscope, plus case studies showing how sites are tackling poaching, human-wildlife conflict, and habitat loss.

It’s a privilege to bring together over 100 conservationists from Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, the Republic of Congo, and beyond—frontline rangers, managers, and researchers committed to protecting wildlife and communities.

Day 1 at @LewaConservancy is complete. We opened with @KWSKenya, heard Lewa’s reflections as they celebrate 30 years, and shared our own 10-year journey with EarthRanger.
