Many schools are starting the hiring process- “If you hire people just because they can do a job, they’ll work for your money. But if you hire people who believe what you believe, they’ll work for you with blood and sweat and tears.”

The school principal sets the tone for a school. A tone of intentional risk-taking and innovation or a tone of rigid compliance. It is the principal who can stifle creativity, imagination, and risk-taking or empower staff to find their greatness…right now
I’ve read how to open schools from “experts” and the CDC ...don’t think they’ve been in schools..but I have..I’ve been a principal for 20 years..got some experience over the years ...if schools are expected to social distance....it’s not possible ..Don’t politicize our kids!

I hear this question asked to teachers but almost never to administrators. It is the principal who can stifle creativity, imagination, and risk-taking or empower staff to find their greatness.

Clear communication is always important! Communication is not about speaking what we think. Communication is about ensuring others hear what we mean- Simon Sinek
When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand- There is a discipline to listening with the intent to understand VS listening to respond.

As educators rethink next year- If all we come up with is passing out diagnostic tests to quantify learning loss and then track kids into groups for remediation, it will be a terrible failure of imagination.
Leadership and teaching is hard work- if you can look in the mirror and know a decision is good for kids- you can rest well.

Great advice for those looking for their first job or those looking for change. Effective principal’s and superintendents can make the difference between staying in the profession or not.
Effort is life’s greatest equalizer. Be good at the things that require no talent and you will have success. "Remember when you were a child and it was so easy to get excited for the most mundane of things. Find that enthusiasm"

Principals check on your staff individually, some are struggling, never underestimate the importance of checking in. Teachers, find time to check on each other, especially if you know someone is having a hard time. Effective schools are a family-families take care of each other.

We frequently hear teaching and being an educator is rewarding… it absolutely is. But, it is also hard work.
I know of no rule that says you have to choose one over the other- So, students first and remember teachers first too.
Without committed teachers, nothing works.
An important message for adults to teach children and equally important for adults to reflect on for themselves.
“You just need to take one step, one decision, one act and meet that one person and you will move from good to great.”- Milton Kamwendo
If a student turns something in late, it doesn’t mean the student has less understanding of the content, assignments turned in on time doesn’t mean the student knows the content more.
A simple leadership tip: ‘If' a student learns should be more important than 'when.'

The best educators build connections with students and preserve hope. Our work is more complex than “relationships” but without relationships the other stuff doesn’t work.

School climate is created by the relationships of all members of the school community. But, it is the principal who sets the tone. It’s the principal who can positively advance culture and climate....and it’s the principal who can ruin it.

The students who are most challenging often need us the most. Everyone, students and adults can benefit from relentless kindness and encouragement!

I Taught It, They Didn’t Learn It: This is an excuse that should never occur in a school. It is the job of an educator to help students learn. If an assessment shows students did not learn, take the professional route and find a new way to help students understand.
@LRobbTeacher
Students work hardest for teachers they like and respect. It's the same for teachers and admin-it's needed for a strong culture and it’s needed to get through these challenging times.
Awesome message! As schools plan for the new year-give pause to overly scripted programs or a belief that everyone should be on the same page each day. Both can be tempting-my experience- neither work.
There is a discipline to listening with the intent to understand VS listening to respond....and listening is quite important now.
The best leaders learn to be the last to speak-
Schools will be doing lots of assessments when kids return....I (we) need to remember...Testing at best can tell us were a student is but not what a student can be.
Relationships make a difference during the best of times and challenging times. Each person has the ability to enhance positive connections, elevate learning & influence culture.
As a principal, you will always be more effective if you bring really creative and dynamic people around you and you give them opportunities to lead. It doesn’t just mean teachers, students can have opportunities to lead within a building, too.
A simple leadership tip: As the school year concludes, allowing a student to retake an assessment communicates you believe in them and their ability to do better.
Letting go of something holding us back is almost always a good decision. As educators, letting go of a less effective practice can open the door to find our next level of excellence - Maybe a round wheel instead of a square!
You cannot have an old-fashioned rigid teacher leading a progressive and dynamic classroom. The same parallel is true for a school. Progressive schools have principals who empower staff and students to take risks and grow as learners and thinkers
It’s critical for the principal to set the example of what behaviors are acceptable in the school. This requires consistency and a high degree of congruence between what the leader says and does. Inconsistency results in confusion and staff often not believing words spoken.
