I have a piece in @TheProspect this morning! It’s about the AI industry and the cancer it’s likely to cause. This one is both deeply personal and (imo) really important, so I hope folks read, share, reflect, etc! (link below). Some highlights 1/🧵.

Tbc, there's no claim about the origin of my tumor. It's an example of how bad even "mild" cancer is to contextualize the health cost. But to say there's no science linking methane/diesel use & emitting NOx, PM2.5, and formaldehyde to cancer is insane.

There either is a lot of bad science or no science involved here with this thesis resting on multiple faulty assumptions. It’s especially true for someone with carcinoid tumor where we don’t have any clear evidence of what truly causes it.

Accelerating buildout of AI infrastructure is going to have massive public health costs and result in a lot of human suffering unless there's a major course correction. And even in lucky cases, that suffering is excruciating. 6/end.

AI data centers are causing a boom in energy demand that’s being met mostly by fracked (methane) gas in a process that increases cancer risk at nearly every step from extraction to use. 5/.

Particularly in light of what I went through, I don’t understand how serious policy discussions about our energy policy routinely fail to adequately address the carcinogenic nature of fossil fuel buildout. 4/.

In February, I was diagnosed with a rare kind of cancer called a carcinoid tumor. As folks with baseball-sized tumors in their internal organs go, I was lucky. It was still a hellish experience. In April, I had surgery to remove the tumor. It took my lung with it. 3/.
