“It is also a terrible discrimination because the first victims of extreme heat are poor people,” Mr. Santamouris said. “Ninety percent of those who died in 2003 were low-income people.”

Naming heatwaves! “The most recent #heatwave — called #Cerberus for the multiheaded dog that guards the gates of the underworld — tilted temperatures well above 37 C (99 F)…”. @DukeEnvironment @ph_alliance @AshleyWardNC

European governments have been slow to put in place broader mitigation strategies for extreme heat, allowing deaths to increase. This year may be no different.

This is terrifying. The economically #marginalized often labor outside, and if they lack proper housing and are faced with electricity rate increases, they can lose their refuge. This is when people die. @DukeEnvironment @AshleyWardNC @ph_alliance
Last night was very warm & muggy! RDU Airport only got down to 79F this morning. That would easily break the daily record high minimum temp of 75F set in 2018, but we will have to see if it holds. For reference, the highest low temp ever recorded on any day at RDU was 80F. #ncwx
