Diversity in politics does not guarantee racial justice. In fact, somewhat paradoxically, it can enable the justification of cruel policies towards immigrants

Those connected with Man City need to come to terms with the fact that the story of their success is not compelling for (most) neutrals. You can hardly fault those who aren’t invested in the success of a club that is being used for sportswashing by an authoritarian regime

No MP deserves to be treated the way Diane Abbott has been by Labour in recent months. She is being humiliated by the party she has served for nearly 4 decades

A provisional driver’s license costs £43 and a passport can cost up to £85. Many of the most disadvantage voters in the UK simply cannot afford photo ID
People should not be forced to spend money on ID to vote. Voting is a right, not a privilege
The solution to racist abuse online is not as simple as punishing the perpetrators. Racist abuse does not occur in a vacuum, it is fuelled by our toxic political culture

The Raheem Sterling Scholarship is open to Black British students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds from the Greater London area. Covers the course tuition fees and a stipend - worth up to £16,250 per year.
Deadline is 30 May. Please share!
It’s irresponsible that this tweet is still up. Elected officials should not use their platforms to spread misinformation or conspiracy. Farage's divisive politics have coarsened our discourse, and mainstream parties have failed to challenge him adequately
The rise of Farage can be partly attributed to both major parties mainstreaming his ideas on immigration, instead of challenging them

I put together this spreadsheet on the 19 new ethnic minority MPs. Some interesting findings:
No ethnic minority MPs outside England.
2019 is the first time the Lib Dems have had more than one ethnic minority elected at a GE.
Of the 19 MPs, 13 are women.
The crackdown on anti-monarchy protests is a clear infringement on the fundamental right to express dissent
If we call ourselves a democracy, the right to protest should be held as sacrosanct

We all know what this will lead to: black people are 9 times more likely to be stopped and searched and 6 times more likely to face force by the police than white people in the UK. Stop and search is both ineffective and rooted in racism
Expanding ULEZ will save lives - air pollution is the biggest environmental threat to human health. And its impact is asymmetric: ethnic minorities often live in the areas with the highest air pollution levels
Also, we need to do something about SUVs 👇🏾
NEW: don’t let the ULEZ chatter mislead you.
The British public is much more supportive and united on Net Zero policies than the public in peer countries, with Conservative voters frequently as green as the centre-left elsewhere

Impossible to separate this incident from the broader political context. Instead of treating asylum seekers with love, respect and dignity, successive governments have pursued a divisive agenda that fuels hate and division - it’s utterly depressing
Huge mobilisation of far-right protestors outside a hotel for asylum-seekers in Knowsley, just outside of Liverpool. They've now set fire to a police van.
This was taken in the last hour:
If you want to defeat the far right, it is essential to directly and firmly challenge their ideas. In some ways, Labour has mainstreamed these ideas rather than opposed them, as seen in their regressive approach to immigration

What Farage fails to acknowledge in this clip is that he has provided the intellectual framework for these riots. His political career has been based on dehumanising migrants, and this is now being used as a vehicle for these racist riots, whether he likes to admit it or not
White commentators criticising ethnic minorities for interrogating the politics of the Conservative’s ethnic minority MPs are being incredibly condescending
‘Shouldn’t you be celebrating diversity?’
Not if that ‘diversity’ leads to the advancement racially repressive policies
How will a Labour government respond to the Reform Party and Farage? Well, you can’t out-Farage Nigel Farage, so firmly challenging Faragism *should* be their approach

Our co-authored paper (cc:
@RimaSaini3105
and
@NeemaBegum
) on the 2022 Conservative leadership campaign is out now in
@Race_Class
, and it is open access 😄
Here is a short 🧵 summarising the paper:
Many players and many fans want some sort of anti-racism statement at the start of games. Many fans do not back taking a knee. So we simply need a new anti-racist symbol that people can unite behind. Not one imported from the states, but one everyone can have ownership of.
Hard to divorce this violence from the government’s deliberate efforts to create a hostile, anti-protest climate. Peaceful dissent and protest should never be met with violence
The last thing we need is yet another commission on racial inequality. The government already have data on racial disparities and inequalities, they have chosen to do nothing.
The introduction of Voter ID is another example of this government’s authoritarianism; it would make it tougher for millions to hold them to account at the ballot box. The draconian measures included in the Policing Bill to crackdown on protests are also an example of this
No one is asking for this. The demands being made centre around the desire for a more accurate representation of British history and a history curriculum that does not systematically omit or overlook Black British history
"The way certain people want the history curriculum taught is about good people being black people, bad people being white people"

On the surface, voter ID laws might not appear repressive or unreasonable, but voter fraud really isn’t a thing in the UK. This is not about ‘electoral integrity’, it is a *deliberate* attempt to disenfranchise the most marginalised members of society

This is very disappointing. Black men are negatively stereotyped for the way they dress, these comments are another example of that.
Klopp wouldn’t have negatively perceived a white player who dressed the same way. There’s no defending these comments.
The unfolding horrors in Gaza were entirely foreseeable, yet back in October, some of Britain’s most prominent politicians gave Israel the green light to indiscriminately punish Palestinians

It’s also a reminder of why the players took the knee before every game at the tournament
Contrary to what Priti Patel said, taking the knee is not ‘gesture politics’, it is a reminder that racism is still a problem in Britain today
