Marjory Allen’s playground advocacy was recently recognised by an @EnglishHeritage #blueplaque. She was one in a long line of pioneering female play space advocates & designers, inc Fanny Wilkinson (1855-1951) and Mary Mitchell (1923-88) #DesignedforPlay #playgroundhistories 6/7

Playground provision increased significantly in the early twentieth century. Only two London County Council parks included dedicated places to play in 1889 - by 1915 thirty children’s gymnasiums had been created. #DesignedforPlay #playgroundhistories 4/7

People often think that playgrounds first appeared in the 1920s. In fact, the earliest segregated sites for play in Britain were created in 1846; Peel Park, Salford included swing for girls, swing for boys, gymnasium and skittles ground. #DesignedforPlay #playgroundhistories 3/7

Children have long played in public spaces. Pieter Bruegel’s painting from 1560 of a Dutch townscape shows all sorts of playful activities taking place. It’s well worth zooming in on the image to see everything that’s going on! #DesignedforPlay #playgroundhistories 2/7
