If it were a country I'd agree with not giving it up; but it's an owned property, and consent gives it power. This is my last tweet...hope to find the good folks elsewhere (& not on threads)!

Popped in cautiously to the-site-that-shall-always-be-known-as-Twitter to see how reasonable ppl are reacting. As always, they adapt, clinging to normal/habitual as long as possible.

I’ve lived in Australia for 9 years and somehow never learned this. So who IS a physician?
Dear @DGlaucomflecken, Some clarification on Aussie terms. “Physicians” here do not include paediatricians, surgeons, pathologists or GPs (Family Medicine). You’re not a physician. You’re an ophthal. “Doctors” is the broader term, not “physicians” 1/2

#Selfless, my new book, is now available! It explores how relationships create us and limit our freedom. I hope it expands the way people see themselves and their social world. The book has been a journey for me and now I’m excited to share it with others!

Do we all agree that the last person to confirm they're in for a group meeting is the one to send the calendar invite? (I'm talking about a peer group without a specific leader or convenor--obviously that person sends the invite no matter when people agree. Right?)

I've been waiting for mainstream culture to start paying attention to covid as a vascular virus--this segment is so helpful, and specifically mentions "vascular virus." Gives me hope!
This is a brilliant segment by the @Todayshow about the direct connection between catching Covid and the raised risk of a heart attack. I had to keep pinching myself to check it was real and I wasn't dreaming. Thank you @NBCNews @ErinNBCNews @DrJohnTorres Please share widely!

A friendly reminder that a bureaucrat with a tiny scope of power can inflict outsized pain when you need something that happens in that tiny scope. May you go months before next having to encounter that reality for yourself. And may my recent suffering buy me relief for a while!

Would you drink the glass of water on the left? If not, why are you still breathing in dirty air in poorly ventilated indoor spaces? 17/

My favorite practical implication of our work: Organizations could screen for power style, even above cultural fit, as a way to ensure creativity, collaboration, and effectiveness without sacrificing the benefits of diversity.

We don't ignore low power. Low power + low volitional influence = misaligned dependence: few options to affect outcomes, leading to passivity. But low power WITH volitional influence = aligned dependence, access to persuasive tactics.

Nate and I also propose a new taxonomy of the resources that can be controlled, resulting in the power side of the equation; we also identify properties such as status, legitimacy, and competence that can foster volitional influence.

Aligned power holders use associative tactics focused on mutual benefit, collaboration, and prestige to exercise power. Misaligned power holders use dissociative tactics--coercive, dominating, even abusive--to force their will.

Power = control of resources; can you reward, threaten, punish? Power + ability to elicit willing influence means the power holder's aims can align w/others' ->ALIGNED power. Resource control w/o "volitional influence" ->MISALIGNED power.

I'm SO happy to share this paper, w/ @nate_fast (coauthor extraordinaire): Our new Social Alignment Theory of Power argues that power can take 2 forms: functional, constructive or coercive, dominating. This is known, but we explain why.
