Looking forward to reading this by an up & coming superstar in the field.
Dear friends, I have uploaded a pre-print draft version of my upcoming work on the historical traditions attributed to Imām Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq on my Academia page. If you are interested in Ḥadīth Studies, early Islamic history, and the history of Imām Jaʿfar's thought.

Virtually every opinion I hold... But how about: I think we should bring back the elitist Islamic philosopher view, which holds religion to be a social good & "noble lie" pointing to higher truths; that we should let the masses persist in them so long as they don't harm others.

Deplorable. Sadly, people only care about atrocities that advance their tribal narrative. Many Catholics finally waking up to the humanity of Palestinians once they realized that many of them are Christian. Yet, same applies to us Muslims: ISIS blowing up 70 Christians, oh well.
In February ISIS affiliated jihadi militants abducted 70 Christians in Congo & killed them inside a Protestant Church. Now ISIS jihadis entered into a Catholic church in eastern Congo during a vigil service. Now over 50 dead. Amazing how little folks seem to care.

ZioNotes #1: Every Israeli Prime Minister in History Has Rejected Palestinian Statehood Just some useful bullet points I compiled before my debate with Destiny. I hope to post more of these over time. https://t.co/TxNu3R4KOy

Just logged in to say that @mehdirhasan should've said "I mustache you a question, but I'll shave it for later." Overall good job by Mehdi & of course disagree with those who bring up the "platforming" thing.

Crucially, jizya is here understood not as a poll tax but tributary tax, extracted from a conquered polity, saving it from destruction & rendering it a vassal state. This is a tradition that stretches far before Islam, a common custom of Near Eastern relations between states. 5/

He writes further: "I think that in the end they will become Christians, out of disdain for the humiliation of the jizya..." Interestingly, this mirrors the Christian experience under Muslim rule, explaining an incentive to convert. 4/

Interestingly, Ibn Ḥawqal (d. after 978) nonchalantly describes this as "jizya". After writing about how the Romans defeated the Muslims, he writes that: "Many of its [Muslim] people remained there, content to render the jiyza [to the Romans]." 3/

In the treaty of 359/969 between the Islamic emirate of Aleppo & the Christian Roman Empire ("the Byzantines"), the former were defeated & became tributaries, agreeing to pay a yearly tributary tax to the latter... becoming thereby a vassal state. 2/

When Muslims paid jiyza to Christians 🧵 1/
In a famous story, the Christian tribe of Taghlib objected to the jizya, not because it was too high but because they considered it a mark of humiliation. They asked instead to pay the zakāt, which may well have been equal or higher, especially for a wealthy tribe like them. 1/

lol he literally does all the time
Ok so why, PRAY TELL, is he not out here trying to make this argument about his identity TODAY? 🤔 Why reserve that glorious ancestry for college only? If he’s so Ugandan to the roots that it’s African ancestry? He needs to come out and stand on that paper identity IN REAL LIFE!

Me: Has Israel committed war crimes? @piersmorgan: We need to wait for due process. Me: Does that apply to Hamas, too? Piers: No, they did their war crimes on camera. Me: So has Israel? Piers: That’s the end of the show

Mamdani becoming NYC mayor is not going to collapse the capitalist system, whether one wants that or not. But he can certainly blunt some of the evils of the system. 3/

I say this not as a socialist but as a social democrat. Socialists within a capitalist system, such as Mamdani as NYC mayor, can bring about great good. This fear-mongering is misplaced, driven by the uber wealthy, & supported by simpletons sadly against their own interests. 2/

I seriously think that most Americans seem wholly oblivious to all the great policies, laws, & protections that socialists have brought to the US, including the 8-hour day, 40-hour week, the weekend, ban on child labor, minimum wage, etc. 1/

I not only agree with this but would also argue that the intellectual should always find him or herself challenging & opposing popular opinions.
A real intellectual should never be member of an institution, political party, association*, etc. If you represent the group you are a propagandist, if you disagree you become a turncoat. An intellectual must be a judge not a defense lawyer. * Excludes bicycling groups.
