#RubialesUpdate
! This time in the form of a paper published! My take on the structures behind what happened at
@rfef
as a symptom of deeper problems in Spanish sport. In
@MSLJournal
and open access!
🚨As they say here, some personal news. 🚨
I am really happy to share my promotion to Reader in Sport Policy and Governance. I am delighted and humbled. Thanks to all those who have supported me since I started my academic career, I would not have done without you.
Nicholas Randall QC, chairman of

@rfef
has withdrawn Rubiales’ salary and official car. He is also asked to return all IT equipment including phone. He won’t be able to use
@rfef
resources for his legal defence.
La Real Federación Española de Fútbol le ha pedido a su todavía presidente (aunque suspendido) que devuelva también el móvil y el ordenador y no le permitirá usar recursos del organismo para su defensa jurídica
UEFA might be starting an (unnecessary) legal battle that, at some point, could regret. If (EU) sports law tells us something, is to beware of unintended consequences.
As EU citizen in UK, I am with
@jonworth
in this one. Love the principle of extending rights of EU citizens to vote and be candidates in general elections, but needs to be EU wide and reciprocal. Cannot be rushed in one afternoon, as much as I like the idea.
New article published! This one has taken quite a while in the making, so could not be happier. We advocate for a new analytical framework to explain sport governance structures. Free e-prints available!
News in Spain that the Madrid commercial court has submitted a request for a CJEU preliminary ruling on the interpretation of Arts. 101-2 TFEU and the role of UEFA and FIFA as governing bodies.
Just received a nice email from a fellow academic saying how much they enjoyed reading a recently published paper. And it was such a boost; not because of the comments on the paper), but for the human touch. If we do not take care of one another, who will?
Ruiz de Lara has been embroiled in a heated discussion with a well known left-leaning Spanish journalist,
@antoniomaestre
about the conservative nature of the Spanish judicature. It seems it started here with a direct personal attack from the magistrate
So,
@sqevans
reports that
@laliga
will "launch a complaint with EU competition authorities" if
@UEFA
is unable to implement the full force of FFP, following
#FootballLeaks
revelations this week.
Although not directly related to the case, magistrate Manuel Ruiz de Lara has been involved today in a public twitter spat with a Spanish journalist. Let me explain, because I think is relevant.
So, as you probably know,
@EUCourtPress
grand chamber started today the oral proceedings in the
#Superleague
case, which will continue tomorrow. Short thread. 🧵👇

For my English speaking colleagues, a burofax is not a fax, I’m afraid. It is a sort of certified and signed for ‘telegram’ used to send communications with legal validity between contractual parties, so there is official record.

New paper out! It has taken a year, but I believe this is the first full research article published on the

Some positive news in the current doom and gloom, as I received this morning my copy of this new textbook I have the pleasure to contribute to. Great praise to

When after 2 & half years, 3 different journals, 8 reviewers, four re-submissions, a reviewer telling you “I do not onow why you submitted this paper to this journal”, you get it accepted.
#AcademicLife
Today I received an email from a world-leading senior academic in my field praising my "fantastic new paper". It is the same paper that the reviewer "could not see how it contributes to the existing literature". 🤷♂️
To me the publication of this book is very special, for it finally signals the maturity and acceptance of football as an area of academic study. Special thanks go to those who dares to believe in us from the outset.

A missed opportunity. The draft Spanish National Sports Law passed today the committee stage at
@Congreso_Es

@LaLiga
demands and their protests, but very few about the decision not to accept
@FASFEaficion
proposals for increased supporter representation.
This is important. The presidents of regional FAs (vast power in Spanish football) call for Rubiales’ inmediate resignation; they also ask Spanish authorities to help with a profound change in
@rfef
structure.
This is not good. After the “noises” from
@iocmedia
now
@uefa
willing to undermine one of the very thin good governance agreements that sport has implemented: term limits. Term limits are essential for accountability. Then UEFA will look surprised when CJEU rules on them…

Today is a very special day. We are launching the Sports Law, Policy & Diplomacy journal. A diamond open-access journal. This is a very special project to make publishing accessible to all. Help us to grow the journal.
🚨Announcement🚨
Today is a great day for us, as we publish the first issue of the Sports Law, Policy and Diplomacy Journal. Our open-access academic journal published in cooperation with

Not a mention of Alberto Salazar in the 5 minute eulogy of Sir Mo Farah preceding

Some exciting news for the year ahead. I am thrilled to start, after the summer, a research fellowship that will take me first to

Centre for Sport Law, Policy & Diplomacy to work on a project on the European Model of Sport. Thanks to Vanja Smokvina for hosting me.
Well, here we are again.
@martynziegler
´s excellent scoop (congrats) has opened the skies of European football governance once again. UEFA has reacted strongly to the challenge, but can they call the bluff?
I am really happy and honored to join
@SDEurope07
Advisory Board. I hope to help the organisation to achieve its aims of supporter representation in football governance.
We also extend a warm welcome to
@DrBorjaGarcia

#SDEAGM21
It is really disheartening that one of Spanish sport's biggest achievements is being overshadowed by the unacceptable behaviour of
@rfef
president Luis Rubiales.
Britain conquers Europe again!! I hear you say after this week’s
@ChampionsLeague
madness? Well, yes, it seems so. And they do it on the back of:
- A German manager
- Dutch and Belgian goal scorers
- An Argentinian manager
- A brazilian/portuguese hattrick hero
- American owners

So, we nos finally have the framework for transfers and registration of overseas footballers in England post
#Brexit
from January 1st, as announced yesterday. A few thoughts after looking at some data.
There we go. We have a case and reference number that could make history in EU sports law. Ahead of us, a legal process that could heavily impact the governance of European sport. Somehow I feel, though, this will disappoint those betting for a “new Bosman”, but time will tell.
So,
#Brexit
nightmare is partially over for me as I finally got British citizenship yesterday. I am not particularly happy. A step I reluctantly took to protect myself. But I am not proud at all of being part of a state that, basically, wanted to make me a 2nd class citizen. 🇪🇺
A groundbreaking reform for English football, if implemented in full. Stronger financial management controls are needed, and greater supporter involvement is paramount to preserve social value of clubs. In my view, good job by

update! Madrid's commercial court (now with a different magistrate, as the original magistrate has moved on to a different court) has lifted the interim junctions imposed on UEFA at the request of the SuperLeague.
Congratulations to

FIFA and six global confederations sign agreement to bar any player that takes part in a breakaway Super League from playing in World Cup or regional events like Euros. Declaration comes amid mounting speculation of a breakaway European Super League.
So, we are about to enter perhaps one of the most important weeks in the interplay of EU law and sport. On Monday morning
@EUCourtPress
will see the

case. Then at 14.30 and Tuesday morning the Court will see the
#Superleague
case.
I was told today by a colleague that my calmed leadership is really appreciated. I've never seen myself as a leader, never thought my leadership skills are specially good (rather the opposite); so this made my day.
