I've been thinking for a while about the meaning of "mainstream" today, & how we can identify whatever falls into this category. By working with @CrulliMirko , I have finally managed to reach some tentative conclusions, which are being kindly hosted by @WEPsocial (Free access!)👇

Introducing a new conceptualisation of the 'mainstream', @CrulliMirko & @DrAlbertazziUK show that while liberal-& social-democracy are 'mainstream', the populist radical right is 'established' but still not 'mainstream'. @Rout_PoliticsIR

If we look at the Italian right-wing alliance as a whole, as I kept inviting you to do, & not exclusively at its components, we find that - in terms of the simple count of votes - this is a modest result. Gone are the days of 48% overall.

The most interesting aspect of 🇮🇹 President Mattarella's end-of-year speech for me is the time spent on the Ukraine war + how clearly & unambiguously pro-Ukraine the speech has been. Those who identify Italy as a weak link within the network of NATO & EU unity fail to grasp...

The data clearly shows that Meloni's success is built, to a large extent, on absorbing her allies. Again demonstrates fallacy of the narrative: "Italians have moved right in large nr". Apart from a share of the vote of the M5S, most of the rest comes from killing off the League.

Sorry to go on about this, but it remains true: @berlusconi 's spot on intuition in 1994 was to understand that abt half of the Italian electorate would vote for a stone, or a bit of grass on one side of the road, if any of them could guarantee to keep the left out of power.

Breaking news: Renzi's ultimatum has now passed. He had announced he'd withdraw his ministers from Conte's govt unless an agreement was reached with the PM by end of the day today. No agreement reached. No resignations. Strong & stable Italian politics strikes again.

And this is how it will go on and on. Under no circumstances can Meloni afford to step out of line with NATO and/or clash with the European Commission. And she won't.

These levels of polarisation are -- quite obviously - unsustainable. And it's not just the US.

I believed the tabloids warning me that @GiorgiaMeloni would rule as an authoritarian leader and she cannot even pick a Health Minister of her liking because good old Silvio says no...

Berlusconi promised "A New Italian Miracle", making reference to the impressive economic growth Italy enjoyed after WW2. But the conclusion that he did not in fact deliver - and indeed brought the country to the brink of default in 2011 - is simply inescapable.

Per carità si può discutere di tutto. E tre mesi a casa possono un problema serio se non hai i nonni vicini (il welfare all' italiana...). Però i paragoni vanno fatti guardando ai fatti.

Vannacci, the radical right army general @matteosalvinimi placed at the head of the League's electoral list for the EU elections, is now widely expected to announce the creation of his own personal party. Huge surprise!

What was widely predicted has happened and right wing coalition wins the elections by a large margin of seats.

Even those voters coming from M5S (not huge amount) are likely to be from its right flank (we know from past studies there were many within M5S. You can think of them as voters M5S BORROWED from the right - for as long as they were credible in their eyes).

Remember how, not that long ago, several international media outlets were peddling stories about an imminent #ITALEXIT ? Now Italian parties are bending over backwards in a race to be seen as "more-pro-EU-than-thou"... Ahead of the pack already: good old M5S & the League.

So, what about right wing voters, esp. those who have switched to Meloni? They are, after all, one quarter of the people who bothered to vote (not "one quarter of the electorate"; neither: "one quarters of Italians", of course... look at turnout this time round).

Italy becoming first country in Europe (the world?) to make it compulsory for all workers, whether in private companies or PA, to carry "Green Pass". They’ll be suspended if they do not (i.e. loss of income). Either they get vaccinated or they keep getting tested.

This is either a second rate comedian who happens to look like Matteo Renzi or the guy himself who is holding a whole country to ransom in the middle of a pandemic. Let that sink in everyone. h/t @marioricciard18

The Italian coast guard has saved circa 2,000 people at sea since Friday, and is out to recover a further 1,500 right now. Ultimately, not even the present govt can afford to ignore requests for help from people trying to reach Europe.
