Incredible game of Boot Hill, 10 players, 7 characters dead, several factions w/unknown allies. Got wrapped up running Faro, lost sight of my objectives, got killed by a vampire, 2nd character survived a couple gunfights, rode out of town w/a wanted criminals corpse & the bounty.

The reality of a game only exists in the minds of its participants. For high levels of PvP, it is important to have more of the gameplay in public with witnesses. With an older patron style model, it becomes a race to see who overloads the DM and gets him to agree to something
I think it was @FolderBloat after Brozeros, who said “the only things that matter are the things you have witnesses for”. There’s this sense of reality that comes from two players having a shared experience that soloplay bookkeeping cannot match. Starting alliances allow context!

True D&D, true roleplaying, and true braunstein require the subordination of wargame considerations (optimal moves and calculated decision making) to the “game as a whole”, a holistic understanding of the world, characters, circumstance, consequence, story, and metacontext.

To clarify, prescripted stories are not gaming in any meaningful sense. Actual story focused gaming requires a combination of emergent storytelling, competitive agents, context, and goals.

This first part is often derided as storygaming. It’s a bad term. When you have players with vision trying to compete as characters to accomplish objectives, you get a sort of competitive, collaborative storytelling. It’s exhilarating in a way nothing compares to.
