Cleared my desk at Bauer today. 11 years of journalism consigned to 2 black rubbish bags. Rescued this tile mosaic made for me in prison by a guy serving life for murdering his sexual abuser. I’d told him my cat Zac had died. He phoned to ask what colour he was then sent this.

Huge kudos to Newshub staff tonight for their incredible professionalism in the face of their own job losses and fears for their future. Class. You all deserved better.

Stuff Circuit - gone. @NewshubNZ - gone. @SundayTVNZ - gone?! No way! It’s not ‘just about jobs.’ It’s about accountability, transparency, giving a voice to the diverse & voiceless. All who shout the loudest about ‘democracy’ - do something. This cannot happen.

I guess it’s too much to ask of media in the wake of the outrageous Wayne Brown journalist cherry-picking, that they get together and say either we all cover you or none of us do. To be one of the outlets “allowed” to cover it is far from a badge of honour.

So many talented young journalists won awards at the Voyagers last weekend that it gives me real hope for the future of our craft. Looking forward to seeing what they do from here.

A huge shoutout to our public libraries. Today, I got the message that Eleanor Catton’s book Birnam Wood that I ordered many months ago, is finally ready to pick up. It’s like celebrating Christmas every week and I hope our new mayor doesn’t destroy it.

When all we hear is negativity about what most journalists do, this list of finalists in the @nzmediaawards is a timely reminder that important work is still being done but is perhaps not always seen or acknowledged in the Twittersphere.
