9 times prior to today has a Keatts opponent shot 39 FT in a game: 8 at UNCW and in his lone NCAA game at NCST vs. Seton Hall in 2018.
6 times a Keatts team has shot 39 FT: 4 at UNCW and 2 at NCST.
So Keatts has been part of a game where a team shot 39 FT 16 times
Yes, Zion was back. He was a beast. And it took every damn one of his 31 points to beat UNC by 1.
That was one more heck of a game. If you think Duke with Zion is a 1-seed, how can Carolina not be?
After a loss to lowly Pitt in mid-February, former Tar Heel and Panthers assistant Jason Capel called out UNC for being soft.
Last night was one of the grittiest performances I've ever seen from a Carolina team. Banged and bruised, they literally left everything on the floor.
Can't say how proud I am of this UNC team. They literally gave all they had, banged and battered and bruised and came within a breath of a legendary championship. Tough way to end but a magical run the past 6 weeks.
In his first 3 seasons at UNC, Roy Williams won 75 games, a RS ACC title, and a Final Four (title).
In his 3 seasons, Bill Guthridge won 80 games, an ACCT title, and 2 FFs.
Hubert Davis enters the postseason in season 3 with 74 wins, an ACC RS title, and a FF.
Pretty strong.
Roy says "hope Zion is OK" as K blows past him in the handshake line like a sideline reporter at halftime, leaving Jon Scheyer to talk to Roy and receive the good wishes.
Joe Lunardi: If they didn't have North Carolina on their chest, they wouldn't even be in the conversation
Also Lunardi: even if West Virginia loses tonight to drop to 5-12 in the Big 12 and losing 5 of last 6, it's all good
Reminder: this is the core group that made Roy Williams believe he didn't need to be coaching anymore.
I've got nothing for what a disappointment this team has been. They deserve every bit of ridicule they receive for not making the tourney.
Every UNC fan knew that last shot by Virginia was going in. Didn't matter who took it or from where on the floor. Been that kind of season.
Like Roy, I don't know what to say.
As the UNC-Duke situation has reached DEFCON 1 in a situation most fans inside the rivalry really didn't want, the fact remains that 100% of the pressure is on Duke. Here's a🧵why: 1/
Lost in conversation about Carolina’s win over Baylor is changing the “How Caleb Love goes is how UNC goes” narrative because Love had a pretty forgettable game yesterday. Being able to win, much less beat a 1-seed, with Love having that kind of day is a huge step forward for UNC
ESPN just did an entire segment from TV timeout to TV timeout with Joe Lunardi. There was practically no description of game action. Just awful television.
Look, I'm not "blame the officials" guy and that in a vacuum is not why UNC lost. But you can't foul out Cadeau on the calls he got tonight and then not give the ACCPOY a call that Duke got on Saturday.
Seriously, Atlanta remains a house of horrors for UNC, who wasn't going 20-0
So Spencer runs his mouth down the floor, yells "f them" on the Carolina end, and nothing, then Bacot yells after a dunk under his own basket and gets a tech.
Got it.
This right here shows why Mack Brown was the right guy at the right time for UNC. Not for wins and losses, but for the culture. He gets it.
Carolina may go 3-9 but for one brief moment all was well again on New Hope Chapel Hill.
Some coaches retire too early. More retire too late. It appears Coach Williams got it just right, given the circumstances.
I'm just glad to see Retirement Roy living his best life.
Can we put the "how tough is UNC" talk to rest now? Yes Zion went down early but Carolina put their boot on Duke's neck and kept it there, even as White and Little struggled. Huge step-ups from Brooks and Woods.
UNC ran 29 plays after going up 24-14, but 5 were passes on the final drive. The ACC's leading rusher Omarion Hampton had 3 runs and caught a check-down, dump-off pass on another, meaning he touched the ball 4 times in UNC's last 24 plays. That borders on coaching malpractice.
Had to catch the Roy Williams presser from the road. Man, that was brutal. Imagine a HOFer with 900 wins and 3 titles (and a
#1
sees just 2 years ago) thinking he wasn't the man for the job anymore. In a field where egos can reign supreme, what Roy did is almost unheard of.
Amazing that this young man has the class and composure to say this as his storied career comes to a disappointing end. Nothing but respect for Berry.
Also, he's absolutely correct. That's what has made the past few years so special.
It's pretty simple...UNC is the same team they were last year, which was a bubble team in late February that caught lightning in a bottle for 4 weeks.
The issue is, RJ and Caleb have regressed as shooters and Nance is no Manek. Can UNC get better? Sure. But lower expectations.
Reminder: UNC beat a Top 25 team by double digits when its QB had his lowest comp % of the season (yet still threw 4 TDs) and nearly 150 yards in penalties. In other words, not its best stuff.
Related: UNC has beaten its 5 P5 opponents all by 10+. Not even Georgia's done that
Nevada, Vanderbilt, and North Carolina were the only 2-0 teams heading into Saturday.
Vanderbilt was drubbed by Wake Forest in Nashville. Nevada is about to lose to FCS Incarnate Word.
That will leave the Tar Heels as the only 3-0 team in college football.
Rece Davis just reminded us that Duke hasn't won a share of the ACC regular season title since 2010 and hasn't won the league regular season outright since 2006.
That's insane.
This is where I remind you that UNC is so injured that KJ Smith, Andrew Platek, and Christian Keeling are getting key minutes in an ACC basketball game.
This may be an unpopular opinion but this is absolutely the right call. No need to force a team that doesn't want to play to keep playing.
Start those critical player meetings tomorrow. Find out who's leaving and get a jump on the portal that *opens this week*
Not only was it a flop but the "contact" occurred after the ball was passed and therefore incidental to the play. Five point swing and just 1 of 137 things that could have changed the outcome of a 2-point OT game.
Could it be, a Roy Williams team...even his least talented one...doing Roy Williams team things and getting better in late January heading into February?
Duke is good enough on their own that they don't need Justin Robinson hitting circus threes or officials calling fouls on UNC every time a Tar Heel face hits a Duke elbow, but here's where we are.
LOL Hurt held the first defender, throwing him out of the play, and then bows the other guy in the face. Foul on FSU.
So glad Duke can catch a break at the end of a close game and find a way to get out a win.
Let's be clear as to why UNC lost:
36% FG
28% 3FG (2-14 in 2H)
9-17 FT
11 pt lead 2X and didn't open it up
11 1H TOs
Ryan/Ingram/Cadeau 8-35 FG
Cadeau limited to 21 minutes for fouls
GT made plays
UNC down 8 and had the ball with a chance to win🤷♂️
But RJ shoulda been shooting
Two years ago, UNC won 2 games.
Tonight, they had a 4th quarter lead over a top 5 team in the Orange Bowl.
So proud of this team and the future is so, so bright.
Disappointed in the outcome but it's still a

An excellent point. Berry and Pinson (and Justin Jackson, who would have been a senior this year) came at the height of NCAA uncertainty and led UNC to a fantastic run. The mark they will have left on Carolina basketball is significant.
Larry Fedora has my eternal respect and gratitude for leading the program through the NCAA mess, plus had two 1st place division finishes in his 1st 5 years.
But now, in year 7, with the NCAA in the rear view and the program entirely of his making, this is the product.
And so it came to pass that just after midnight on January 15, on Dr. King's 90th birthday, Silent Sam was finally, completely, gone.
Many (including me) wish that Folt had acted sooner but as Dr. King said, "the time is always right to do what is right."
That's part, but not all of it. Washington improved. Trimble healthy. Cadeau as true PG is big, but addition of the energy and effort of Ryan and especially Ingram, plus even Withers, is huge. IOW, this team is built entirely differently.
Caleb is thriving; so is UNC. Win-win.
ESPN's Jay Williams on UNC:
"There was obviously something going on last year w/Caleb Love. When he's not on the floor, now you see this is RJ Davis/Armando Bacot's team. ... They've been getting back to rebounding & defense, too.
"That's a team that can win a (championship)."
UNC is 14-2 in its last 16 games. They have beaten two top-15 teams by a combined 17-2 the past two days.
They're gonna host a regional after being left for dead and on the outside of the tournament looking in at the end of April. That's an amazing turnaround.
No worries about the football result today, because as Dean Smith famously reminded us,
@UNC
is a women's soccer school. Congratulations
@ncwomenssoccer
!
UNC beats UCLA 4-2 in penalty kicks and advances to the NCAA College Cup for the 28th time in program history. The Tar Heels will face Georgetown on Friday here in Cary.
I know DJ Burns is the media darling during this NCST run, but Diarra is a heckuva story, remaining true to his faith while managing his Ramadan fast to play at an elite level 🫡
"It's nothing short of miraculous what he's doing right now."
NC State big man Mo Diarra (
@Rvtpi2
) was up at 5:15 a.m. CT to prepare for Marquette. He notched his fourth straight double-double to notch 85 points and 100 rebounds in eight postseason games.
Congrats Virginia. Best team in the country. Play at such a high level.
Carolina will be just fine. They play with heart and passion and very easily can make it back to the Final Four.
Heavy snow falling in downtown Louisville but

So if report of 4 vaxxed NCSU players testing positive is true: while possible to get Covid after vax, the odds of 4 in a group of 25-ish is essentially nil. Much more likely it's a testing issue. NCAA had the entire day and tomorrow to get this right and, as usual, flubbed it.
Schools should start selling jerseys of former stars and the players should get their due cut, I would buy an official UNC Joseph Forte
#40
jersey right now
No contact in the air. Hamilton landed and then threw his hip into Robinson. Foul on Robinson.
This alone did not cost UNC the game but these turned out to be the game-winning FTs.
Losing a game - and your senior leader - on a play like this is UNC's season in a nutshell.
As Virginia joins the list of famous first-round upsets in college basketball history, this is a reminder of how extraordinary it is that Roy Williams is 28-0 in the NCAA opening round.
Cory Alexander with the lazy analysis about UNC playing its first true road game. Heels played 3 games against ranked teams away from Chapel Hill so it's not like they've been playing cupcakes at the Smith Center for 12 games.
