Backhand “Ozzie Drill” from INF camp. Making it advanced by challenging w/ hard feeds. Player utilizing the pick & press glove actions, depending on the hop. That’s 2 of 3 actions used by infielders... Drill develops rhythm, confidence & quick exchange...“Pick & pop”
@TroskyRanch
Baseball is the only team sport where the defense controls the ball. To be great, you must learn how to "play offense on defense!" Mentally...A missile is going to be hit at me every pitch and I want the ball. On my toes ready to go get it, I'm ready NOW. No pitches off. Ever.
Dirt Bros...Look at the varied creep into prep steps of SS and 2B. You must get into a comfortable, dynamic, explosive position as ball gets into hitting zone. Be prepared for a missile every pitch and expect to go side to side. This will improve your consistency and range.
A quick word on cutting down distance when it comes to the skill of the declared backhand. To be a high level infielder, you must understand how to use your internal clock to utilize this action to cut down distance and beat the 4 second clock!

Fielding a tough hop requires loose hinges (wrist, elbow, shoulder). & Relaxed, soft, accurate, quick hands. In this drill there is an emphasis on all the above, as well as a quick exchange and release. The fielder is emphasizing “relaxed” and trusting instincts....on every rep.
The

skill missing from today’s athlete is mental toughness. Refusing to hold oneself accountable to individual and team goals. Blaming others for circumstances. Not fighting through adversity. Pouting and poor body language. Physical skill can only take you so far. Get tough!
The game of baseball is not about YOU. Never has been, never will be. It's about togetherness, your Dirt Brothers. Having your teammates back. It’s about TEAM....FAMILY. Putting others before self. It’s bigger than you. If you want it to be all about you, go play golf or tennis.
The “3 Step/5 Step Drill” is a very effective drill to work on an explosive crossover step (which improves range), moving low into a good fielding position (on time and out front), reading angles, making quick exchanges, and making double play “like” feeds firm, but with touch.
Want to work you way into a lineup? First, be a serious Dirt Bro on DEFENSE. Secondly, treat practice as your game. Hustle. Show out. On offense, be a barrel machine. Square the ball up to all fields. Lastly, be able to execute sac, drag, push, slash, H & R, squeeze.

WHEN DO I KNOW WHEN I HAVE TO GO? Meaning, what dictates that I need to come get a ball and cut down distance instead of sitting back on it as the batter gets down the line and the clock continues to tick? Coach Trent Mongero explains the dead giveaway that helps elite infielders
8 qualities of a mentally tough infielder. A must read and apply for any aspiring Dirt Bro. This was shared with me and I don’t know who created the original, but I absolutely love it! Take time to unpack all the insight below. Worth every second.
The more you can learn how to master becoming an elite juggler, the more you will start to see your hand eye coordination separate from your competition. Any infielder who considers themselves serious about being masters of their craft should know how to juggle at an elite level.
A couple (of many) key throwing drills for infielders that should be a part of a detailed throwing routine that progresses from simple to complex, develops a short and repeatable arm stroke, and improves spacial awareness/body control.

If you pout, cuss, kick rocks, stare at your glove, throw your bat, slam your helmet after an error or poor at-bat, you look like a jerk who can’t control emotions. Worse, you embarrass your team…while empowering your opponent. Stop it and grow up.

Most neglected drilled skill in INF play. Tough fly balls …“Texas Leaguers” over infielder’s heads. Yet we expect players to make these plays routinely in games. This “Fly Ball Drill” should be executed w/a partner, as part of the “Big 5” daily INF drills/routine.

Energy between teammates is real. Both positive & negative…including silence. The goal? Positive synergy. Authentic positive communication, verbally & non verbally. It significantly improves performance of others. We can feel when our teammates & coaches pull for us. It matters.
Dirt Bro players and coaches don’t fall into this group. Never have... never will. Dirt Bros not only play the game hard every pitch, but they love their teammates. It’s TEAM over ME. TEAM wins, we WIN.

Reactionary Drill. A must for 3rd & 1st baseman. Develops “cat like”reactions w/precision reads of angles, hops, while improving hands/feet. Fielder will quickly grasp value of “playing low to high” on every rep. Make mistake of starting high & ball will pass under glove hand low

Mass team “pickoff drill” called the “carousel.” Filmed in 2007, it still is a must to maximize time when working on stealing outs &/or neutralizing the running game. We have added new twists to this drill over the years so use imagination to get as much needed in this segment.
Dirt Bros bring energy. Period. It’s part of their internal make-up. Remember...A quiet team is a losing team. Communicate with each other & be enthusiastic about it. Genuinely pull for teammates. Energy is contagious.
All the drills you work on at home (in garage, basement) to improve should aim towards improving 1 of these 3 areas. Don’t get caught up in the wow factor of a drill. It should practical & improve confidence, consistency, and/or range in the game. This was filmed 15 years ago.
Self feeds and partner feeds, along with keys to implementing the “press” or “positive” glove action made famous by many of Ron Washington’s drills. (Shown below: Zone 1 and 2, self feed “press” drills). The press glove action is used by INF to cut off the up-hop, sometimes
Learning to “shift a lane” to right of a ground ball hit right at us and transition back on center to field... while maintaining momentum to target is hard for some Dirt Bros to learn. This effective cone drill over exaggerates this action to teach feel.

The type of hop dictates glove & lever actions. Player’s internal clock (speed of ball, speed of runner, how far ranged) dictates how many steps taken after ball is gloved & arm slot used to throw. Taught & drilled over time, it becomes instinctual & smooth.

Coaches hit fungoes at INF (10 ft to right or left), 90% of reps in practice. Yet that play only happens 23% of time in games. Conclusion: challenge INF with a wide variety of plays they have to make in games. Complete plays in 4 sec or less. Promotes game freedom/consistency.
To become a great athlete, there is one skill, above all others, that must be mastered. Some call it “bounce back,” others, “possessing a short memory.” Truth is “you have to care about your performance, but not too much.” Yea, I know that’s confusing. In other words, you have to
Understand your craft is part 1. Successful implementation is part 2. Here are 7 tips for all Dirt Bros. My favorite is be an athlete, not a robot. Infield play has mechanics, but is interpreted in an artistic way. Trained eyes identify “Dirt Bro Dudes” by their good “actions.”
Two fundamental actions of a Top Infielder or a Dirt Bro. React in any direction. The Footwork Star Drill. Infielders NEVER take pitches off. They are anticipating a missle hit at them & are ready to explode side to side, front to back & diagonally.

It’s when we struggle, have a bad game, two or three, is when we have a great opportunity to develop leadership & respect. How? Because it’s easy to be “the guy” when all is going great. But being “the same guy” when it’s not, shows you can walk the walk, not just talk the talk.
Yep. You can count on Sheets & Kai for some audio gold every time they are miked up. I love the % of ground balls the left side of infield gets vs right side, who they get them from (RH vs LH hitters) & the spin type. Great takeaways for Dirt Bro players and coaches.

Simple math. This is an awesome visual. If you can’t catch & throw at an elite level, your opportunities for playing time will reduce and your career will be cut short. Throwing routines should be executed with the intent of the last play of the championship.

Myth: Infielders should get in front of all ground balls possible. Fact: There are times when fielders are better off “declaring” a backhand vs. fighting to get in front of the ball. Key: Players must drill/practice various plays/hops to all 3 lanes (Neutral, backhand, forehand)

Becoming an elite player means failing in practice. Problem is, good players don’t like to look bad in front of others. But when implemented, over time, skill is acquired & bar is raised. Sounds easy, yet it’s anything but. It’s a process that includes developing mental toughness
Use the footwork ladder to reinforce proper approach to ball. Present glove as gradually lowering the body to control eyes. Hinge wrist. Exaggerate low and out front. Just left of center. Create a nice rhythm and tempo to drill. Right, left, field. Repeat.

Be QUICK…but not in a HURRY. Every day work on a stopwatch for game speed/game challenge feedback. The VAST MAJORITY of amateur infielders work at a speed slower than the game in practice every day & wonder why the game magically speeds up on them come game time.
