The teacher's workday is not designed for us to create or even modify curriculum. This is why boxed programs are the easiest way for teachers to stay working within contract hours AND the biggest threat to effective instruction.

It was a four play kind of trip. I think retirement is pretty great so far.

Forget the fake reading wars. Read books, find the ones that bring joy, tears and laughter. Show your kids what books can do. There is no kit, no program that gets them there without that!

I’m retiring today and I promise to be fully present for all the fun to come!
Today's Poetry Thread: BEING PRESENT This has to be the best poem about being in an experience instead of trying to capture it (with a picture, a video, even a selfie). Of course the irony is that the poem captures, creates, forms an experience. Feel free to add poems.

Everything has an ideological spin. Everything. Vaccines, masks, 15 min cities, yoga, supplements, unproven therapies, homeopathy, longevity, wildfires, GMOs, the weather, etc, etc. I've been studying twisted science for almost 30 yrs. This level of partisanship is new.

Powerful lecture from Jackie Goldberg of the Los Angeles school board on protests against a children’s book with one sentence about families with two moms or dads. She says this is personal for her and really lets loose at the end.

It is so difficult for students to learn when they are in survival mode, and it is nearly impossible for a teacher to be the best teacher they can when they are in survival mode.

Something interesting you might not have realized: a number of words in English are nouns when you stress the first syllable but verbs when you stress the second. "Your CONduct is better when you conDUCT yourself appropriately.”

The problem with scripted programs is that it engenders mindlessness in teachers. When we ask teachers to follow a curriculum with fidelity, we don't encourage them to think about the science of learning.
